Course outcomes are contingent on your inputs. The course is titled Supply Chain Planning and Operations Management. This is a slightly more qualitatively focused course. The course will have a focus on supply chain management in the context of manufacturing and services, but moreover, a focus on operations management and 1|Page

the delivery of services. The intent is to discover how leaders and managers can create value by delivering services effectively and efficiently within operations. Effectiveness is based on key tenants such as value, quality of service, time and place. Therefore, the course will also focus on Project management and usage within Operations. We will explore these concepts through text, case studies, discussion and simulation. The expectation is that students will be able to do the following: 1. Critically analyze overall operations and identify opportunities to improve effectiveness and efficiency 2. Understand operational value 3. Diagnose barriers to creating value 4. Determine effective and efficient solutions to barriers 5. Leverage concepts learned to solve operational issues Readings The following books can be accessed for free using UCD account. Remote access requires a VPN. See link below: https://www.library.ucdavis.edu/service/connect-from-off-campus/ The following textbook will be available through the equitable access book program • William J. Stevenson, Operations Management, Year 2020 Textbook from Shields Library (FREE): • Eldring, Jan, Porter’s (1980) generic strategies, performance and risk an empirical investigation with German data, Year 2009 Textpaks We will use a Textpak with several case studies. The Textpak will be available one week before class starts. Refer to page 7-8 of the syllabus for titles. Preparation for class and lecture All material is meant to assist with the learning process as well as promote critical thinking and discussion within your respective groups. Your exploration and completion of assignments will inform your thought process for class, as well as allow you to participate in the learning environment in a meaningful way. We will cover only selected chapters and sections within the textbook – in addition to material that may not be covered in the text. The attached schedule indicates which chapters/sections are recommending for reading before each class session. To facilitate learning and class discussion, students are expected to read the assigned chapters prior to the lecture. We will spend time during class to discuss selected case studies. Refer to lecture one for recommendations on reading and analyzing case studies, and page 7 and 8 for list of case studies. The goal here is to create a rich learning environment through discussion, promote critical thinking and challenge assumptions.

Teams Purpose – to provide a framework that will increase the ability of students to participate in planning, problem solving and decision making within the learning environment (and the real world). Increased participation in teams promotes: • a better understanding of the path to decisions, • more support for and participation in implementation plans for assignments / deliverables, • increased contribution to problem solving and decision making, • more ownership of decisions, processes, and changes, and • more ability and willingness to participate in the learning process overall The course has a focus on team. Teams will focus on company paper, project paper, Capsim and your team project presentation. Each team will have a lead. The lead will act as the CEO for their Capsim company and will also help lead their team become the best for their respective industry. Other responsibilities include delegating tasks for other team assignments. In addition, the TA’s and myself will be reaching out to each team lead for updates on team performance. As a lead, you are eligible for four extra credit points. Note that if you are not running your business properly, you may be removed as CEO and forfeit the extra credit. Class contribution Purpose1. promote student interest 2. promote student engagement 3. provides professor and student feedback 4. promotes preparation 5. allows professor to manage course context 6. allows for balance of participation 7. allows students to dialog with each other 8. promotes development of public speaking skills 9. allow for use of the language of the subject Learning is not passive. A rich learning environment is created through a mutual exchange of ideas, experiences and learning. This class relies on informed engagement for learning; therefore, assignments must be completed, and class participation is critical. Quality contributions involve critical listening as well as thinking – before speaking. You should be prepared to contribute to class throughout the term by surfacing issues that are relevant to the current focus of the class. You are expected to attend every class session prepared. You will demonstrate preparedness by integrating learned concepts over the term. Quality contributions are: 1. Contributions that use logic, evidence and data to support conclusions – it is more than an expression of an opinion 2. Contributions that demonstrate curiosity 3. Contributions that take into consideration the ideas already surfaced and move the discourse along with new insights

Attendance Purpose – 1. Acquire learning through lecture (to supplement materials) 2. Opportunity to ask questions for clarity 3. Face time with the professor and peers 4. Promote understanding This course offering is an “unplugged offering”. Due to the nature of the course work, engagement is critical. If an electronic device is warranted due to language or disabilities, please seek permission from student disabilities services. Assignments All assignments should be completed and posted to the course portal. For team assignments, one person should submit to the portal for the team. Late assignments are simply not accepted. I also do not accept assignments via email. All assignments must be uploaded to the course portal. Late means that the assignment drop box is no longer accessible. There are occasionally technical issues with the course portal. Therefore, I encourage you to submit in a timely enough fashion to account for technical concerns. In the event an issue should occur with the portal or otherwise, please ensure that you communicate with me promptly so that we can discuss alternatives / options. Case studies Purpose1. Explore example of a real-world situation (capturing key concepts) 2. Explore practical application of key concepts 3. Promote development of key skills: a. Problem solving b. Analytical assessment / thinking c. Decision making d. Coping with ambiguities In class, we will analyze several case studies based on a guiding framework. The instructor will lead / facilitate a class discussion about the case. The goal is to connect theoretical concepts with practice as well as discuss relevant concepts. Case study homework Purpose – think about how the week’s theory readings apply to the case. The homework assignments consist of answering a question for cases discussed in class and justifying your choice within one page. Homework will be evaluated on a check basis: to get a check, you must 1) give an unambiguous answer to the question, 2) make a reasonable argument for your position using case facts and the theory in that week’s readings, 3) spelling and grammar. Make sure you answer the question asked, i.e. make a choice and take a position. Company paper Purpose – gain a better understanding of one of six basic strategies and how they apply to a business. Strategy drives the decision-making process on operations, supply chain and other business units. 4|Page

A team writing prompt will be assigned that will focus on one of the six strategies available in Capsim. The paper will serve as a strategic roadmap for the simulation. Your team can utilize the same strategy implemented by your selected organization. The roadmap will inform your decisions round over round within each functional area with a focus on integration. Individual assignment – writing prompts Purpose – gain a better understanding of the course frameworks and how they apply to a business. Several individual writing prompts will be assigned that will focus on creating a fictional supply chain for a product/service. You will utilize course frameworks that are covered in lecture and assigned textbook reading material. If time permits, we will have in-class breakout sessions for students to brainstorm ideas. Group project / final presentation Purpose - to allow your team to explore and leverage the concepts learned in the course, as well as demonstrate understanding of practical implication / application, strategic implementation and elements of project management. Teams will communicate proposed business strategy for incremental improvement or sustainability, action for strategic implementation, key performance indicators and contextual detail to explain your simulation performance – as well as potential future performance. You will complete the Capsim simulation in round 8. Your team will have an opportunity to facilitate a reflective review of your performance. At this time, each team member should garner a better understanding of the following: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

complete understanding of strategy and Key Performance Indicators, (KPI’s) impact of all decisions made- round over round decision outcomes understanding of data points available round over round understanding of industry / market landscape understanding of integration (functional areas)

These are just a few areas to include in your team discussion. This certainly does not include all opportunities for reflection and review. The goal of your final presentation is to consider how your team will facilitate a project to address potential challenges or capitalize on opportunities to enhance performance, if there were additional rounds / life cycle for your organization. The goal is to reflect upon and discuss what you have learned over the 8 years of the life cycle of your organization and determine how you can leverage the learning in a meaningful way to impact future organization goals and objectives. Capsim Purpose – to promote an action / engaged learning environment. The simulation imitates a real-world process over a period of time. The simulation will offer insight to managing integrated systems within a total enterprise, allowing students to leverage the concepts learned through assignments, text, lectures and discussion. The class will be divided into 18 teams: group size ranging 5-8 students (depending on class size). You will participate in Capsim, a course simulation. The simulation has a focus on managing the total enterprise. 5|Page

Participants take the reins of a $40 million company that has no clear direction and poor financial results. The task is to build the business, adding products and focusing the management decisions from every key department on the company’s goals. “Lab” or discussion days will be spent with the teaching assistant. This time will be utilized to discuss strategy, understanding of concepts, align practical concepts from the text, etc. Foot race To help with the mechanics and understanding of CapsimCore, we will create FREE CapsimCore accounts. These accounts are designed as individual and self-pace, meaning that you can complete the whole simulation on your own, and repeat the rounds if you’d like. It will also be a good opportunity to understand the simulation as part of the course grade includes an quiz solely on the simulation. Note that this account is for training purposes, and students will need to register for tournament account. Tournament account Students will compete in a closed-market competition.
