Microbiology Lab Assignment 1...
Advantages and Disadvantages of the API 20E Kit The Analytical Profile Index(API) is a miniaturized version of conventional tests that are used to identify Gram-negative bacteria. The system utilizes a plastic strip with 20 separate compartments and a total of 23 biochemical tests can be done in one strip of the inoculated bacteria. The API system comes with a number of advantages. The first is that it is very inexpensive and easy to obtain. It does not involve a complex methodology in the identification process, it allows for easy inoculation and rapid identification. The API test can be done in as little as 18 hours, whereas some other biochemical tests done in test tubes can take from 24-48 hours. This system, however, also comes with a few drawbacks. This method of testing can only identify known bacteria that are in the API database, and the results can be inconclusive. There is an approximately 5-10% wrong identification rate while using this kit which can affect accurately identifying the bacteria in question. This method is restricted to identifying only Gram-negative bacteria, the members of Enterobacteriaceae and cannot identify specific strains of bacteria....
