This Study Guide has been designed to help you prepare for the midterm exam, which will take place on Monday December 2 from 12:30 to 2:15 pm in DB 0010 



  



You will be asked to provide the meaning and significance of five (5) terms - out of eight (10% each = 50%). You must discuss the terms in the broader context in which they have been addressed in the course, giving specific examples where possible, and/or indicating why each term is significant. You will be asked to address one essay question – out of two (50%). Your answer must be presented in essay format, including an overall thesis, an introduction and a concluding paragraph. The exam is worth 20% of your final grade Instructions will ask you to ground your answers in course material (readings, lectures and tutorial discussions) and to avoid generalizations. Note that you should not contact the Course Director or your TA asking us to define the terms and discuss the essay topics. All the information is in course lectures and required readings. It is your responsibility to reflect on the terms and questions, to review the course material, and to discuss the study guide in small groups in your tutorial. Do not bring books, papers, dictionaries, cell-phones, or other electronic equipment into the room unless they are INSIDE YOUR KNAPSACK (Not in your pockets or purse). All belongings not necessary for the exam will be left at the front of the room, INCLUDING CELL PHONES. Be sure to turn off phones (including alarms).

ESSAY QUESTIONS 1. While in theory political power in Canada is based on the supremacy of parliament, in practice it functions on the principle of the Imperial Prime Minister. Explain by discussing the roles of both the executive and legislative branches. 2. How do our electoral and party systems contribute to-- or help alleviate-- the problems of democratic engagement in Canada? 3. Liberal Democracy has been influenced by earlier theories of democracy. Outline the major innovations and ideas/thinkers of Athenian and Republican Democratic theory and how Liberal Democratic theory has built on and gone beyond these earlier approaches to democracy. What do you think are some of the strengths and weaknesses of Liberal Democracy, and do you think that Marx’s Direct Democracy offers a more democratic alternative? 4. It is said that most major political ideologies are a reaction to liberalism. Explain and provide examples. Are some ideologies a threat to democracy? If so, which ones and why?
