PERSONALITY DISORDER OF TED BUNDY

Introduction Theodore (Ted) Robert Bundy Born: November 24, 1946 is perhaps the most heinous and notorious serial murderer in the recent history of the United States. He was serial killer, necrophiliac, and rapist. He admitted to killing at least 36 women in Utah, Florida, Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and California. In 1989 he was put to death by electrocution. (Moes 1991). Bundy, exhibited all the characteristics, was a psychopath that functioned and even flourished in his career and personal life, while preying on young women that he would eventually rape, murder, mutilate and discard. Bundy was born into a life of deceit from the very beginning. Born to his unwed mother Eleanor Cowell and unknown father into a deeply religious family, he was raised as the adopted son of his grandparents and his mother known to him as sister. At a very young age of three there seemed to be something unusual about him, a fascination with knives. Later, he became a peeping-tom and began stealing things just to remove them from the possession of others. Some of these items had very little value other than it just depriving them of the item. In his college years, he surrounded himself with those he wished to be and began a relationship with a very wealthy young woman that would later break up with him leaving him devastated. It is said that many of his later victims resembled his college sweatheart.

Bundy’s Psychopathic Traits Bundy was extremely charming to the women he preyed upon. Often he would act injured, walking with crutches or faked a disability to gain their trust. He was also known to impersonate uniformed service personnel to gain his victims trust prior to abducting them. In all the interviews and interrogations conducted, Bundy never at any time displayed the slightest bit of

remorse even after he was sentenced to death. Much like a narcissist, Bundy was arrogant in a way that he taunted law enforcement and believed that he was untouchable. His knowledge of the law gave him a feeling that he was always a step ahead and was convinced that he was the best at everything that he did. He often took risks without regard for safety and would lie or cheat the system to remain in favor of those he preyed upon and law enforcement. Finally, he was a master manipulator that mimicked others emotions to appear genuine and manipulate others emotions to persuade them to do things they would not normally do. (Silkes, n.d).

Why Psychopath? Ted Bundy was callous, but charming. He conned and manipulate others with charisma and was able to mimic feelings to present as "normal" to society. He was organized in his criminal thinking and behaviour, and maintained emotional and physical control while showing no emotions. As a psychopath he was aware that what he was doing is wrong, but did not care. A sociopath is less organized in the way they carry themselves. A sociopath is more likely to spontaneously commit their acts without thinking about the consequences. Compared to the psychopath, the sociopath live a normal life while committing their acts, as they can form attachments and often have a normal temperaments.
