Description

MLA Citations: Non-Print Sources What is included in an MLA Citation and in what order is the information presented? Each section of the MLA citation goes in a specific order. If information is missing, skip it and go to the next available piece of information. The order does not change, even if information is missing. Remember: Who, What, Where, When, and How. Who: Author- The last name followed by first name separated by a comma with a period after the first name. --If the author is a group, capitalize all the main words and follow in special capitalization rules observed in the name. Example of author: Adams, Abigail. Example of group: Lone Star College- Montgomery STAR Center. What: Title - Books and movies are italicized followed by a period, whereas articles and short stories are bracketed with quotations marks with the period placed before the closing quotation mark. Example of a book: Dear Sir, Remember the Ladies. Example of an article: "Early American Feminism: In the House of a Founding Father." --NOTE: Capitalize the first letter of each main word in the title and the subtitle, in addition to the first letter in the first word of the title and subtitle. Where: Information regarding the source's specific information- This includes the source name in italics, with the volume (vol. #) and number (no. #), not italicized and separated by commas. Example: US HerStory, vol. 2, no. 13, When: Date of publication- The date is listed in the order of day, month, and year with the day and year using numerals. --NOTE: Months longer than 3 letters should be abbreviated, using the traditional abbreviations for each month. Example: 2 Sept. 2019 How: Varies depending on the source's format, or how the source was found. An online source will use the DOI (Digital Object Identifier) or the URL address which is used for database sources. Articles and short stories use the page number (p.#) or page numbers (pp. #-#). Books and movies do not use this section; the only exception would be if the book was an online version. -- NOTE: If the source provides a DOI, use that, but if the DOI is not provided use the URL. The DOI is formatted as DOI: http://doi.org/10.xxxx. Examples of online sources with DOI or URL: DOI: http://doi.org/10.3352/jeehp.2013.10.3 URL: www.herstory.org-women-make-history-too Example of an article: p. 2 OR pp. 2-7
