for Heather M. McNamee...
Minnie Hardin purpose of her letter was to get Mrs. Roosevelt to see that the new subsidies were giving the hard-working taxpayers money away to the people who do not want to help themselves by putting in the work to get off relief, in short, the new deal is helping too much. Hardin wastes no time in expressing how she feels about the “never do well class,” she feels as though they are trying to live without having to ever work (183). This is just the first of her many points she makes to prove to Mrs. Roosevelt that the new deal is too generous. Hardin goes on to say that she knows of ‘reliefers’ who have been kicked off of relief and refuse to work unless they get the same type of hour and pay as they got when they were on relief. No one wants to hire them at those costs because their work is not worth that kind of money (184). This people who would not work go on to prove Hardin’s point that America doesn’t need a new deal it needs a square deal, one that does not over help the unwilling. Hardin speaks about the old people who are on what she calls a ‘beggars allowance’ that are living better lives now than what they tried to get for themselves when they were able-bodied (184). Hardin explains that she knew some of these older people who live off of $30 to $60 a week now when they used to live off of $1 a week. Hardin's point here is not that these people shouldn’t be able to live as they do now, but simply that the new deal is bringing to many people a get out of work free card then helping them get back on their feet....
