Addressing Social Issues Health Policy & Social Issues University of North Alabama

I personally enjoyed the interactive website. It directly shows how one thing is impacted by another and directly affected by an action. It is easy to follow and lays out a cause and effect relationship between your health and actions you take. Policies affect healthcare in many ways. A few of those ways being: public policies can create, regulate, and maintain public goods that foster supportive environments for good health (our state roads and highways), public policies can regulate natural resources to prevent harm (The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation), public policies can set requirements and mandates that protect citizens (mandatory seatbelt laws), public policies can provide direct support in ways that affect the drivers of health (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families), and public policies can reduce barriers, create opportunities, or provide incentives that influence the choices that impact health (Tennessee’s HOPE scholarship) (Birk, 2016). Homelessness and access to healthcare is a big issue in today’s society. In order to address this issue, I would analyze the causative factors and try to discover new ways to adjust behaviors that impact this issue. I believe that addressing the health behaviors, environment, and social and economic factors can greatly impact the ways that healthcare can be involved in resolving this issue. Policies in healthcare serve the public in many ways to help create more uniform ways that healthcare is provided to the public to ensure that quality care is provided to all individuals. New policies can help to resolve this public issue by ensuring all individuals can have access to some type of healthcare. For instance, free clinics for the homeless, access to the prescriptions needed once they are seen by a medical provider, medical supplies needed in order to care for their needs, and transportation to the clinics. I think the website could help in laying out the framework for understanding the cause of someone being homeless, the effect it has on them and their health, and what we can do as a society to solve the issue (Jego, Abcaya, Stefan, & Gentile).
