In this case study, Blue Ridge Paper Products (BRPP) is an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). An ESOP is an employee benefit plan that gives workers ownership interest in the company (Kroncke, 2017). Because BRPP operates as an ESOP, they do not have the financial backing of a large corporate conglomerate, and therefore, they must use whatever means necessary in order to contain cost, including healthcare cost (McLaughlin & McLaughlin, 2019).

BRPP hired healthcare workers in order to assist & educate the other employees on health issues in order to reduce healthcare cost. They created a position for a nurse coach who was assigned to individuals who answered a healthcare assessment. Hopefully, this would help employees and spouses set goals to improve their health and therefore decrease healthcare cost.

In an ethical sense, I think it is unethical to pay the employees $10,000 to go to India for a major procedure. You could even consider the payment to be a bribe. The United States has the best healthcare in the world. To ask your employees to accept anything less could be putting their health and even their life in danger.
