Mystery at the new Bible Museum: Are its Dead Sea Scrolls fake? https://www.cnn.com/2017/11/17/us/bible-museum-fakes/index.html https://www.cnn.com/2018/10/22/us/bible-museum-fakes/index.html

Argument in Favor of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The Dead Sea Scrolls are ancient manuscripts that were found at several sites near the western shore of the Dead Sea. Professor W. F. Albright, America's foremost archaeologist, described the scrolls as "the greatest archaeological find of modern times." (Stetzer Bio & Richardson, 2012). Several of the dead Sea Scrolls are relevant for understanding the historical context of Christian origins. Steve Green, the founder and chairman of the Bible Museum says the dead scrolls are very important part of the bible story and they testify to the reliability of the timeless truth of the scriptures. These scrolls are also important part of the Bible Museum.

Argument Against the Dead Sea Scrolls. Arstein Justnes, a professor of biblical studies at the University of Agder in Norway, says the Greens’ fragments tell quite a different story and that this one is about a scandal in the world of biblical antiquities.Kipp Davis, an expert on the Dead Sea Scrolls at Trinity Western University in Canada, is one of several academics trying to warn Christians, Others suspect they are expensive forgeries meant to dupe American evangelicals, including the family behind the splashy new Museum of the Bible in Washington, DC.If Justnes and other scholars are correct, the Dead Sea forgeries could be one of the most significant shams in biblical archeology since the “Gospel of Jesus’ Wife,” a fiasco that hoodwinked a Harvard scholar and made worldwide news in 2012. Scholars and scientists have identified more than 70 Dead Sea Scroll fragments that have surfaced on the antiquities market since 2002. Ninety percent of those are fake, including the ones at the Bible Museum. Some scholars accused the Greens of buying too many artifacts too quickly, without being sure exactly where they came from, or who had owned them in the past. To this accusation Steve Green responded that the Bible Museum should have exercised more oversight and carefully questioned how the acquisitions were handled.

Impact Of the Controversy While the controversy did not change the interpretation, importance/significance of the Dead Sea Scrolls to both parties, it however helped to enlighten and sensitize the public on the importance of verifying the authenticity of this artifact, especially the Green family who is involved in collecting artifacts for the Bible Museum.
