Description

1. Why does W. L. Gore’s unique management structure work? Gore’s management structure uses flat lattice-style which allows multiple work and career pathways, and lacks the traditional top-down hierarchy. There is no hierarchical approach in Gore's management. Employees are known as ‘Associate’ and leaders known as ‘Leaders’. Associates receive pay-cheques based on their performances and thus are responsible for their own work. Employees being responsible for their own work have better productivity and a sense of responsibility. 2. What trade-offs does W. L. Gore make by using the flat lattice structure? In other words, are there certain disadvantages that W. L. Gore has chosen to accept in return for other benefits? Some of the disadvantages that Gore has chosen to accept include in return for the benefits include: Talent management – Organization that use hierarchy model often hire and retain talented employees by moving them up the hierarchy or offering better benefits. Lattice approach pays associates for performances and has a reduced ability to manage talents.  Compensation and rewards – The lattice approach do not have a clear structure to allow it to form and compensate workers according to qualification and level of expertise. Gore has either associates or leaders thus trading the ability to reward or compensate based on hierarchical ability.  Evaluation and Motivation – It is hard to evaluate and motivate employees in lattice structure. Their motivation and sense of responsibility are derived from their performances. The organization does not have a structure to evaluate and motivate employees. 3. Would you like to work in a flat lattice—style organization? Why or why not? 

This will allow vibrant ideas to be implemented unlike in other hierarchical organizations where lower level employees have no voice. Cross training and sharing of skills among employees are also possible in a flat lattice style organization since employees are not restricted to a single functional area. Employees also get unlimited time for learning and development opportunities. The company utilizing flat lattice will have a competitive advantage from increased flexibility to adapt to a constantly changing environment. Thus, I prefer flat lattice structure....
