Module six Definitions: Addiction: compulsive and maladaptive dependence on a substance or a behavior; the dependence typically produces adverse psychologic, physical, economic, social and or legal ramifications Tolerance: occurs when a person has to take more of the drug to “stay normal” and/or prevent withdrawal Dependence: What is meant by the four C’s? Compulsive behavior (finding and taking the substance) Cravings Chronic relapsing brain disorder Cognitive impairment What is the CAGE-AID tool? C: have you ever felt you ought to cut down on your drinking or drug use? A: have people annoyed you by criticizing your drinking or drug use? G: have you ever felt bad or guilty about your drinking or drug use? E: have you ever had a drink or used drugs first thing in the morning (eyeopener) to steady your nerves or get rid of a hangover? AID: Adapted to Include Drugs Have you ever ENABLED?
