MOVIE REVIEW (RIZAL SA DAPITAN BY ALBERT MARTINEZ) The movie Rizal in Dapitan is an interesting portrayal of Dr. Rizal’s life and his exile in Dapitan. From 1892 to 1896, Dr. Jose Rizal was detained at Dapitan. These were the last four years of his life where he served as a prison. In his stay in Dapitan he often compared it to being imprisoned in "a beautiful cage." Rizal had never been imprisoned for so long. He was completely lost during those days, but he did not lose his mind. There are moments showing the brutalities that Dr. Rizal endured while pursuing out his goal to liberate his beloved nation. He was detained there and placed under the control of Spanish government. Dr. Rizal has contributed significantly to the development and improvement of that oppressed and uncivilized province. Upon watching this movie, I think we saw another character

of

Dr.

Rizal,

as

a

teacher.

academicallywell and aside from that his students are well-mannered. Rizal’s stay in Dapitan also shows how much he care for his countrymen and his love for his motherland. We can prove that because we’ve seen in the movie that while staying there in Dapitan he is serving his countrymen through doing civic works such as helping people who are sick, promoting education by teaching unprivileged students who cannot go to school and many other things that he thinks would help in improving and with the development of the society. While being detained in Dapitan, he never forgotten about his family he would like to see his family because he misses them so much but he had to ask permission first with the government. Fortunately they were given a chance to meet each other again and Dr. Rizal, took this ooportunity to sure his mother given the fact that he’s specialized in the eye field. And

he succeeded on that one. Another thing I noticed about this movie is that most of the friars' sermons were directed at Dr. Rizal, and he was constantly attacked by the friars in everything he did, despite the fact that everything Dr. Rizal did was for the benefit of the people of Dapitan. The friars also kept on accusing him as “erehe at filibustero” when he did not really turn his back in the church. Rizal met Josephine Bracken, whose adoptive father had an eye condition and needed treatment from Dr. Rizal. While they were both in the same area, they fell in love and chose to marry, despite the church's refusal to hold a wedding ceremony. They lived ha ppily ever after until a rumor surfaced that Josephine was a Spanish government spy. Furthermore, the most unforgettable and painful sequence from that film was when Rizal was wrongfully buried rather than at the cemetery where he deserved to be. His mother sobbed a lot, urging the Spaniards to inform her where his favorite son was buried, which was an injustice. This happening in Rizaleven after he died serve as an eye opener for every Filipino, awakening their consciousness and allowing them to understand the injustice that existed at the time. This incident in the past serves as an example to every Filipino of the importance of staying loyal to our motherland and loving her with all of our hearts these days. It also emphasizes the importanceof education especially during these times....
