Dominique Gallicchio October. 14, 2019 NOVA Killer Landslides Movie Summary:

Landslideso Landslides can strike more than once. o Landslides occur in every U.S. state. o Some are slow, others are rapid. o Landslides are hard to predict. o Shallow ones involve the top layer soil, on top of rock. o Lidar reveals the scars left behind by past landslides

10:30am March 22nd, it had been raining for months, a slope slips, a landslide startso The landslide made a terrible sound. o A hillside turned to liquid mud wiping out 49 homes, dammed a river, crossed a highway and kept going. o One square mile buried under 15 to 75 feet of mud, houses were destroyed, anything in its way was picked up or moved. o It was 138 seconds and happened in two phases. o This slope has slid many times in the past and could slide again in the future.

This wasn’t the biggest landslide, the biggest is centuries old and twice the size as this most recent slide. o Challenge: figuring out how long and how frequent the landslides are in that area. o This slope has a pattern of failing, quiet, and failing again about a decade later. o The slope is a known actor.

Rescueo There are trained rescuers in the area, but no one was prepared for all the devastation. o Air support. Searches for survivors/bodies using a thermal camera. o No live people, no heat signatures of dead or alive people were found.

Distal end of the landslideo Everything debris (houses included) were all moved to the far side of the valley. o One home was found hundreds of feet from where it stood. o A woman was buried but managed to push up through the mud and debris. o A young boy was found, his family was buried, when the landslide hit, he was on the second floor. o This landslide was very devastating.

The 600ft slope slide for a mile, further than the slope had ever slid before. o The head scarp has been retreating back.

Recreating a landslideo Study how a landslide works. o How much rain is too much water? o Add water to soil until it turns to liquid. o Then cracks start to form, and they measure things like the creep and failure.
