Understand Karate and Kihon, the first basic principle 1.! Why understand Karate 2.! Learn basic defensive moves 3.! Know basic technique of stance History of Karate and Strikes 1.! Know the history of Karate 2.! Know how to execute proper form 3.! Know how to gather information for a game Start learning Kata, the second basic principle 1.! Learn basic open hand strikes 2.! Lesson/Activity Description:
This first class will allow students to reflect on what they want to get out of this club. They will discuss why they joined.
Opening Discussion: (Review/Preview)
What is karate? What do you know about it and where did you learn it from?
Lesson/Activity Steps:
This day will be an introductory course focused mostly on the students’ motives followed by an explanation of what and why we are studying the style. It will be focused mostly around discussion followed by a page of reflection. •! •! •! •!
10 minutes of Introduction, plus Icebreaker to learn each other’s names 15 minutes, students will get into small groups and respond to opening discussion question 15 minutes of discussion as a whole group 20-30 minutes of a one-page reflection on what they want to learn and a drawing

The students will take today’s discussion and apply it to the defensive strikes they are going to learn the next class.
Reflection:
“How have you defended yourself in the past? Think of an example and discuss why you felt you needed to defend yourself, someone else, or something.”
