Description

Tiling a Bathroom Floor Introduction: The question proposes whether tiling a bathroom floor with nickels or regular ceramic tile is more expensive. This question can be solved by determining the cost of materials, time it takes to complete the flooring, cost of labor, and the total cost.

Tiles: Cost of Material: 1. Laguna Bay Tile (Home Depot): $0.82 per tile/12 x 12 tile = $190.24 total. .82 x 116 = $95.12 per room. 116 tiles make up 1 room. For both rooms, it is 232 tiles which is how I got the total $190.24. 2. Sanded Grout (Home Depot): 10.5 pounds/$14.98 for one room. For both rooms, it is 21 pounds/$29.96 (14.98 x 2). Time: 12 hours for 120 square feet. 39 hours total including, 1 hour of prep, 1 hour to layout the tile, 1 hour for grouting, and 24 wait-time after installation. For both rooms, it will take 78 hours (39 x 2). Labor: Cost $9 per square foot. (9 x 20) = $1080 per room. For both rooms, the cost of labor would be $2160 total. Total: $2380.2 for both rooms or $1190.1 per room (190.24 + 2160 + 29.96)

Nickels: Cost of Material: 1. One nickel is priced at $0.05. If each nickel is $0.05, it would cost $1609.65 or 32,193 nickels per bathroom. For both rooms, it would cost $3219.3 or 64,386 nickels. 2. The sanded grout would cost $19.98 or $12.5 per room. Time: .5x32, 193=16,096.5. 16,095.5 = 268.275 hours or almost 4 and a half days (4.4 days). Labor: The labor would cost $3,000 per room, or $6,000 for both rooms. If the charge for placing nickels was $25 per square foot. Total: The total is $9,239.28

Conclusion: In conclusion, nickels are not an appropriate replacement for ceramic tiles. The total cost for laying tiles is $2380.2 for both rooms. Whereas, the cost for laying nickels is $9,239.28 total for both rooms. Therefore, the cost for laying tiles is much cheaper than the cost for laying nickels. Although each nickel individually may be cheaper at $0.05, you would need much more nickels than tiles to complete the flooring. For example, the cost of each tile is $0.82, but you only have 232 tiles to floor both rooms. Whereas, you need 64,386 nickels to floor both rooms, making it much more expensive.
