LIBERTY UNIVERSITY MUSC 396_001 – Junior Artist or Worship Program (1 Credit Hours) Spring Semester 2017 Mr. Paul H. Randlett [email protected] Office: SOM 276 Phone: (434) 582-2281 I.

Course Description A faculty-supervised 20-30 minute program devoted to the presentation of literature representative of contemporary Christian, worship and praise, gospel song, or hymn-style music. The student must demonstrate ability to organize a program using a variety of media, Scripture, drama, lighting, video, band and praise team. The student’s final worship/artist program must be approved by Faculty Committee.

II.

Rationale The junior artist or worship program is designed to assess the student’s assimilation of performance and leadership skills appropriate for the Christian artist/musician and/or congregational worship leader within a group context. It is the student’s responsibility to coordinate all aspects of a well-planned and executed worship event.

III.

Prerequisite statement Approval of the student’s primary applied faculty instructor. It is the student’s responsibility to make up any prerequisite deficiencies, as stated in the Liberty University Catalog, which would prevent the successful completion of this course.

IV.

Materials List The student will work from a preapproved pool of song charts located on Blackboard.

V.

Learning Outcomes When completing this course, the student should be able to: 1) Demonstrate competent skills in the preparation and memorization of rhythm charts, both instrumentally and vocally. 2) Prepare a worship team for performance through effective rehearsal leadership. 3) Demonstrate strong group cohesion (blend and dynamics) throughout both the program and the individual songs. 4) Work with other students in the group setting to craft a worship program which exhibits a well-balanced musical flow utilizing principles of song pacing and style, use of Scripture, comments, musical underscore, and other creative transitional elements. 5) Engage the congregation in effective worship leading (Platform Presence, Eye Contact, Vocal/Instrumental Confidence). 6) Demonstrate appropriate confidence, authority, and energy for the context of each song. 7) Effectively incorporate creative visual and/or dramatic components.

VI.

Assignments/Requirements a. Mandatory Meeting: Each student is required to attend the mandatory MUSC 396/496 outlining the specific requirements for the program. (Tuesday, January 17 @ 5:15 PM in SOM 212) b. Rehearsal Attendance: Students must attend five (5) rehearsals prior to their group hearing. It is expected that rehearsals will be coordinated among the members of the group such that all members may attend each rehearsal. (Individual students may be required to alter their work/social schedule in order to attend.) Students who miss a rehearsal may request an excused absence from the course instructor. Only under extraordinary circumstances (Death in the family, documented illness) will a student be granted an excused absence. Five rehearsals are the minimum required to successfully execute the MUSC 396 worship program. Additional rehearsals may be scheduled as necessary. c. Rehearsal Journals: Five (5) journal logs must be submitted via Blackboard throughout the semester. The journal should include: a. Names of those in attendance b. Rehearsal date c. Start and end times d. Brief description of the rehearsal (songs rehearsed, who led, what was emphasized…) e. The student’s contribution (as a leader) to the rehearsal f. **Due when you present your program.** d. Song Transition/Evaluation Paper: This is a 1-2 page paper outlining the primary theme, key, and musical style (driving, ballad, fast, medium, slow…) of three songs (the song prior to the student’s, the student’s, and the song following the student’s) along with a description of the transitions before and after the student’s song. Special attention must be given to explaining how the student’s song choice fits within the theme of the program, its placement within the program, and an evaluation of the choice of transitions around the student’s chosen song. (Use Turabian formatting) **Due when you present your hearing** e. Hearing/Program Guidelines: A group may only complete the program if they have passed their hearing. The hearing must exhibit thorough preparation and be “program ready” with the exception of minor adjustments as suggested by the three-person adjudication committee.

Technical Request: Groups must submit the technical request form found in the Course Content folder on Blackboard outlining all of the technical needs for the hearing/program. Attendance Policies For the good of the Liberty University student body, a consistent attendance policy is needed so that all students in all majors will understand the expectations of faculty in all their courses. In general, regular and punctual attendance in all classes is expected of all students. At times, students will miss classes. Students will be permitted elective absences per the policy below. University-approved absences will not count towards these absences. •

• •

Students who are late for class 10 minutes or less are considered tardy but present for the class. If a student misses in-class work due to tardiness, the faculty member may choose not to allow the student to make up this work. Three class tardies will be counted as one absence. Students who are more than 10 minutes late for class are considered absent. Questions regarding elective absences must be addressed by the student with the professor within one week of returning to class. In cases where this is not possible, the student must notify the Professor in writing of the circumstances impacting his or her absence. The student may appeal the Professor's decision in writing to the respective Chair within one week. Final appeals may be made to the Dean in writing within one week of the Chair's decision and the Dean's decision is final. When circumstances result in excessive absences (e.g., serious medical illness, family crisis), upon return to campus the student shall communicate in writing with the Registrar's Office ([email protected]) and provide an explanation of his or her situation with appropriate documentation. The Registrar will consult with the faculty member before making the final decision and will notify, in writing, the student and the faculty member.

Student Elective Absences (While the University believes that consistent attendance in all classes is the largest contributor to students earning good grades, the University Attendance Policy allows students in upper-level classes the opportunity to make their own decisions concerning attendance)

It is the student's responsibility to ensure they are present for required classes and turn work in when it is due. Students must be present for all group rehearsals (TBD), the group hearing, and the group program. Failure to attend the hearing or program will result in failure for the semester. IX. Other Policies Dress Code Students are expected to come to class dressed in a manner consistent with The Liberty Way. Honor Code We, the students, faculty, and staff of Liberty University, have a responsibility to uphold the moral and ethical standards of this institution and personally confront those who do not. Academic Misconduct Academic misconduct includes: academic dishonesty, plagiarism, and falsification. See The Liberty Way for specific definitions, penalties, and processes for reporting. Disability Statement Students with a documented disability may contact the Office of Disability Academic Support (ODAS) in Green Hall 2668 to make arrangements for academic accommodations. For all disability testing accommodation requests (i.e. quieter environment, extended time, oral testing, etc.) the Testing Center (Green Hall 2700) is the officially designated place for all tests administered outside of the regular classroom. DROP/ADD POLICY A Fall/Spring course may be dropped without a grade, tuition, and fee charges within the first five days of the semester. From the sixth day until the end of the tenth week, a Fall/Spring course may be withdrawn with a grade of W or WF Classroom Policies The inappropriate use of technology, such as cell phones, iPods, laptops, calculators, etc. in the classroom is not tolerated. Other disruptive behavior in the classroom is not tolerated. Students who engage in such misconduct will be subject the penalties and processes as written in the Liberty Way. X.
