11:15am-12:05pm Rock Music Opinion Essay If someone were to ask me what I think about rock music I would say it would consist of loud, obnoxious music and musicians singing very loud. I believe I am not able to determine the difference between rock and heavy metal music which is why this class will show me the distinction between the two different genres. I would say that rock music is one of the most unique styles of music. Previously I was neither interested in nor did I find rock music entertaining, but now I want to learn more about the culture of rock music. When I think of the type of people that listen to rock music I see them as someone who has many tattoos, crazy hair, and wearing dark colors to concerts. My perceptions are a stereotypical view of rock music because I was exposed to those types of movies as I grew up. When I think of rock music bands I think of Queen, Metallica, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. These rock bands have done a lot for the modern and rock audience like making music different from what is considered “normal” in that time. Rock music is so different from other styles of music which may have caused other artists to follow their footsteps and make unique music. Nowadays, I would say rock music is not really “alive” except for a handful of bands. I do not believe rock music is “dead” now but it was definitely not as popular as it once was. Now the more popular music genres are hip-hop, pop, and R&B music. I started listening to rock music when my freshman roommate played all of Queen’s albums on repeat. Coming from my Indian background I did not listen to rock music so I had never heard of Queen. I have found that the rock community is large even though rock music is not popular as it was before. I can say that rock music is not “dead” and it catches the attention of the current and even new rock music fans. Apart from Queen, Metallica, and Red Hot Chili Peppers I think the most influential rock music band is The Beatles. The Beatles are perceived in such a positive way because of their style of music and how they used their music to offset the tough times during the 1960’s. They have so many iconic songs that attract young audiences. Currently, The Beatles show a good example of rock music even in this day and age and I can say that I have been listening to rock music more often recently. I hope this class teaches me how rock music came to be by showing me the history and listening to different types of rock music. I want to learn more about the styles of rock music that I normally do not listen to but I also want to know more about the artists I normally listen to. I do not know much about rock artists so I want this class to show me more about the rock artist’s background. Overall I am really excited to take this class because it will provide me a better insight of rock music....
