Expected Pharmacological Action Opioid antagonists interfere with the action of opioids by competing for opioid receptors. Opioid antagonists have no effect in the absence of opioids.

Complications Tachycardia Tachypnea Abstinence syndrome (Cramping, hypertension, vomiting, and reversal of analgesia)

Contraindications/Precautions Naloxone and naltrexone are contraindicated in clients who have opioid dependency
Nursing Interventions Monitor respiratory status and pain
Interactions Can precipitate withdrawal in patients physically dependent on opioid analgesics
Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness
As medication becomes effective, explain purpose and effects of naloxone to patient.
Reversal of respiratory depression (respirations are regular, no SOB, RR 16-20/min in adults and 40-60/min in newborns).
