Notes for the first network technology lecture...
Network technology lecture 1 KF4002 Assessment 50% each, one after semester 1, one after semester 2. One exam after christmas, in January. Other exam in exam period, semester 2, after easter break. A brief introduction to networks • • • •
Focus on medium and large world wide networks. Depending on the network depends on how you access it. Higher speeds on smaller networks. More errors on larger networks.
Peer to peer For this you just need a cable, its less complex and easy to set up. Bigger networks You need different hardware and software to make it happen. Media - connections Protocols and rules intermediary network devices perform functions such as regenerate and retransmit data signals. Such as wireless router, LAN switch and for smaller networks. High speed, low errors. Routers used for wired connections in bigger or longer networks, higher errors. Network media - copper, fiber optic, wireless. Network representations -
All networks have a network interface card. Each has an address. LAN Local area network and WAN wide area network. Lan is separated by geographic distance and connected by a network known as WAN. So WAN connects LANs together. Intranet This is company only, meaning it is secure from the rest of the world. The extranet is from suppliers customers and collaborators that can use some of the systems. The internet is the rest of the world and what they have access too.
Security in networks
Admins can protect networks with software and hardware security and by preventing physical access to network devices....
