C1L3 - The human brain Monday, January 16, 2017 1:00 PM
A sequence of human evolution Australopithecus
6 million years ago
Homo habilis
2 million years ago
Homo erectus
1 million years ago
Homo sapiens
100 thousand years ago
Two types of homo origins 1. Savanna hypothesis 2. Water baby hypothesis
Brain Size Brain size has increased steadily in the human lineage, but the biggest increase occurred with the appearance of first humans, homo habilis. To explain the increases one needs to explain both the big jump and the slower increases There are lots of explanations for why brain size increased and they are probably all correct - it just is not clear when each of these factors made its contribution
Everyone has a hypothesis of brain size increase 1. Blood flow - radiator hypothesis 2. Tools - best tool maker, biggest brain? 3. Love - round head = bigger volume = bigger brain 4. Neoteny - baby having babies 5. Temperature- cold region = round body, bigger brain 6. Food Is human brain related to brain size?...
