1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY A project can be defined as a temporary endeavor where a group of activities that have been planned and executed in order to produce a unique product or service within a specific time frame, budget and the customer specifications. However, project delay is one of the most common problems in every construction project where poor project management might be the reason of this issue. Project delays can be very frustrating especially for the contractors where it can cause cost overruns as well which can deviate far from the project requirement to complete within time and budget. Therefore, we have decided to produce Smart Management System which is a handy, convenient and easy mobile application that provides all features needed for construction project management in a single mobile application. The purpose of combining all features needed for construction project management in Smart Management System is to solve the problem of project delays. In order to collect all information needed and customers’ responses to our new product development, conducting a market survey, concept testing and test marketing are very essential where we have carried out a survey using Google Form. It is conducted because to identify either our products can achieve target and to obtain the the demand of the customers towards the products which all the information needed can help improve more on the products. Based on the survey that have been made, it proves that only those involved with construction field that knows the existence of the management system mobile application where it would be a bit difficult to commercialize our product. However, it can give benefits to people working on construction field where they are more preferred to use mobile application instead of using a laptop on site. Most of the respondents from construction field agreed that project delay is the most common problem faced in the construction industry due to poor project planning and management. They give positive reactions to our product where it is because of our product is a new idea that combine all features needed in one handy mobile application which many things can be done in this application. They also agreed that our product can help them to ease their work and promote effective communication between parties involved which also can reduce any problems that arise at the construction site. Therefore, it can be proved that our product, Smart Management System is relevant to be sell to the market.

2.0 INTRODUCTION

2.1 Problem Statement/Issues Project is the unique process consisting of a set of coordinated and controlled activities with start and finish dates, undertaken to achieve an objective conforming to specific requirements, including constraints of time, cost, quality and resources. It is also a temporary endeavour undertaken to produce a unique product or service. Meanwhile, managing a project is called as “project management”. According to Project Management Institute (PMI), project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to project activities in order to meet or exceed stakeholder needs and expectations. Project management includes defining the project goals, specifying how the goals will be accomplished, what resources are needed and relating the budgets and time for completion. Managing a project is the matter of keeping the scope, schedule and resources in balance. Scope is the range of tasks required to accomplish project goals. Schedule indicates the time and schedule as well as the total project duration. Resources are the people and equipment that perform of facilitate project tasks. A project success is defined when it is completed on time, within budget and quality conformance. In this pandemic era, project delays are the most common problems faced in the construction industry. Project delays can be described as the late execution of works in comparison with the planned schedule. There are several factors that could lead to the project delays such as poor site management, inadequate number of construction equipment, lack of effective communication processes, change of orders from the client, insufficiency of construction materials, ineffective project team members, lack of effective project integration, poor project planning and scheduling, inadequate funding, change in project priorities, bad weather, unclear project objectives and poor project management discipline. Those delays could be reduced and cut down if the problems are identified and taken into consider earlier. Project delays could result to cost and time overruns. It is very important to keep the project on track to steer clear of the risk of project delays. For a contractor, delay means the rise in overheads such as the workers and resources. A proper project planning and management is essential to guarantee the project can be constructed smoothly and act in accordance with the schedule.

2.2 Objectives of Report The main purpose of our product which is the Smart Management System mobile application is to solve the problem of project delays. The following are several objectives to be attained as follows: a) To coordinate the various interrelated processes of the project. b) To ensure the project is completed on time and within budget and resources. c) To promote effective communication between the project team members and key stakeholders. d) To ensure the project risks are identified, analysed and solved. e) To ensure the project is correctly designed to meet its objectives and satisfy clients’ need. f) To provide a mechanism for monitoring the project.

2.3 Methodology NPD Process The method used for this new product development is conducting the survey by distributing questionnaire through Google Form medium. This method is chosen to obtain accurate data regarding our new product development as well as to collect all the information needed and customers’ responses to our new product development which is the Smart Management System mobile application. Smart Management System is a mobile application for construction project management with the features such as to manage all the documents, drawings, photos and details of the project, as a medium to communicate with other stakeholders, for project scheduling, to find out the percentage of project progress, as delay tracker and as weather forecast to make it handy, convenient, easy and practical to solve the problem of project delay. Hence, it is necessary to acknowledge our potential customers’ responses towards our product and their suggestions to improve our product. The target audience for our new product development’s survey is the lecturers, civil engineering students, and people in construction industry (site engineer, contractor, site supervisor and project manager). Due to the pandemic situation in Malaysia, it is hard to reach out to the people in construction industry in person. Hence, we have decided to distribute the survey through WhatsApp application chat groups consist of civil engineering students in UiTM Shah Alam. The questionnaire consists of the questions regarding our new product development. The total number of responses we have received from the questionnaire is 122 responses. We can analyse the data obtained from the questionnaire and improve what can be done to satisfy their preferences.

2.4 Limitations The new product development has several potential limitations. Limitations may exist because of the constraints on the methodology of the new product development. Some of the limitations for this new product development are the survey is limited to the students of Faculty of Civil Engineering, UiTM Shah Alam because of the pandemic situation in Malaysia, other survey method such as interviewing the people in construction industry cannot be conducted because of the pandemic situation in Malaysia and we could not produce the prototype because of the complexity of the product itself. First and foremost, the survey was conducted to find out all the information needed and customers’ responses to our new product development which is the Smart Management System mobile application. We are using Google Form as the survey medium to get more accurate results compared to finding the information from just any researchers. Our target audience is the civil engineering students, lecturers and the people in construction industry such as site engineer, contractor, site supervisor and project manager. However, it is hard to do a survey in the construction site since it is a pandemic era. Therefore, we have decided to distribute the survey through the WhatsApp application chat groups consist of civil engineering students of UiTM Shah Alam. This is because the civil engineering students have the experience with project management during their industrial training and the knowledge about project management. Furthermore, other survey method such as interviewing the people in construction industry cannot be conducted because of the pandemic situation in Malaysia. The duration to complete this new product development report is 4 weeks. Logically, we have enough time to do interview session, but Malaysia has decided to implement Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) by the time we are assigned to complete this new product development report. The decision is done since the number of positive cases of COVID-19 increased throughout the country. Hence, our movement is restricted and doing the interview session with the people in construction industry is not suitable at the moment. Building a prototype is essential for new product development. We are required to come out with the 3D/2D drawing of our prototype. We could not produce the prototype because of the complexity of the product itself. Hence, we can only design the Smart Management System application’s interface.

3.0 NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

3.1 Definition New Product Development (NPD) can be defined as a new product or service designed and created by entrepreneurs to generate income from it. The purpose of product development is to satisfy consumer demand in order to encourage, retain and increase a company’s market share. However, it is not easy to ensure every new product created can fulfil every consumer demand where this process requires the company to understand the customer needs and wants. The main variables that can fulfil customer needs are cost, time and quality. Therefore, it is compulsory to clarify the consumer demand and target market early in the product development process where quantitative market research needs to be conducted during the process. New Product Development is important for a company to survive where it provides a platform for the company to compete because increased competition between companies lead to new products created. Every companies are struggled to fulfil and maintain consumer demand by offering exceptional products where new product innovations ...
