2 REFLECTION ASSIGNMENT

MSN Program Outcome #5: Advocates for positive health outcomes through compassionate, evidence-based, collaborative advanced nursing practice. In week seven’s chapter 51 reading on the geriatric patient, the emphasis on the need for the nurse practitioner to be aware of the dangers of polypharmacy was made. The chapter reading made me more knowledgeable about being an advocate for said patients in order to protect them from adverse drug reactions and drug to drug interactions and help them get the full benefit from medication therapy. Due to physiologic effects of aging, polypharmacy greatly impacts treatment outcomes, and the nurse practitioner must ensure that he/she advocates for positive outcomes for this vulnerable population through compassionate, evidence-based, collaborative interventions.

MSN Essential # VIII: Clinical Prevention and Population Health for Improving Health In week five, I was exposed to the importance of the role vaccines in disease prevention. Through the immunization assignment, I gained knowledge of the most recent guidelines and recommendations for vaccine -preventable illnesses in the United States. I understood the impact such knowledge has in improving population health through positive outcomes. Also, I became cognizant of the barriers to vaccination and the role the nurse practitioner plays in providing the necessary information to patients and their families for them to make informed decisions based on current evidence in the literature.

3 REFLECTION ASSIGNMENT

NONPF Core Competencies: Scientific Foundation Competencies Week three’s assignment on hypertension provided the opportunity for me to be cognizant of the importance of gaining and familiarizing myself with the knowledge and understanding of treatment of clients with specific diagnosis in the primary care setting. I compared two clinical guidelines on hypertension. Based on evidence in the literature, I integrated and applied the knowledge of the expected outcomes for medication management, including expectations for follow up care, such as assessing patients for the development of side effects and complications. The assignment heightened the need for the future nurse practitioner to think critically about the best available evidence and apply this evidence to enhance practice methods and patient outcomes....
