Description

Description This year’s OSCE exam was very interesting because we had to demonstrate our skills online in video. Well, that was enough to be nervous about but the second thing to happen to me was I did not receive a link to join the exam room. That makes things more complicated for me and I started to feel very nervous than before. Finally, I made contact with my unit coordinator and they got me linked. Then when I was performing the actual skill of administering intramuscular injection, after drawing up the medication in the drawing up needle I picked needle cap in my hand to recap the needle. Where I should be using the scoop and click technique. My assessor had to give me a clue about my mistake and I corrected myself by stating I would restart it again and always consider my safety first.

Feeling I felt anxious about picking up the needle with hands to recap it. I felt I had failed in first place performing the skill that I had problems mastering. I felt embarrassed and my hands started to shake. I thought I had made a big mistake by picking the needle with my hands to recap it. I questioned my ability to administer IM injection with not considering my safety.

Evaluation The better thing is to do all my 6 rights + MAX while getting prepared IM injection and at the point of administration, medication safety was ensured (New South Wales. Technical and Further Education Commission, 2017). The poor thing, though, is, although I had learnt the importance of using a scoop and click technique, I did not implement it in my OSCE. I should have used a

scoop and click method to avoid needle stick injury for myself and contaminating the needle as well .Recapping needles is particularly dangerous as it can lead to accidental punctures of the fingers or hands which can lead to possible exposure to toxic substances, narcotics or biological infectious agents. (Shouri, 2017)

Analysis By understanding the crucial value of myself and patient health, I relate this knowledge to my current learning. I have to be fully mindful of the requirements that both ACORN and NMBA stipulate.

Conclusion This experience has reiterated the importance of scoop and clicks the needle to recap. What if I have injured myself before even performing my OSCE? What if there is real medication and I could have gotten into my body by pricking myself from the needle. I have learnt to always use scoop and click technique if I have to recap the needle.

Action Plan I have learnt that how important is not to recap the needle by holding it in the hand. And I will link my analysis from other units of theory to my practical unit. I will ensure that the techniques I am using are safe for me and patient as well before I undertake any nursing procedure. I have also revised the nursing process and I will be using it in my clinical placement. And will follow the entire NMBA nursing standard mainly Uses the correct processes to define and report

potential and real system-related issues and where the activity might be below expectations standards. (Standard 6.6 NMBA 2016).
