Reflection Journal Alyssa Velez NURS 327 SG1: Medical-Surgical Nursing in the Adult Population Professor Jevonne Johnson February 8, 2021

2 My name is Alyssa Velez, and I am a 24 year-old second semester nursing student at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Although I’m a nursing student I have a B.S. in Health Education and Promotion. One interesting fact about me is that I once did a zipline obstacle course over an alligator farm in Florida. This semester I hope to increase my competency on real-world application of my subject matter. Although learning about medicine and the human body is interesting what really drew me to the nursing was the practicality of the information learned that can be used not only in a professional setting but in a personal one as well.

After attending skills day on campus, I feel some of my anxiety surrounding this semester’s clinical experience relieved. I enjoyed the opportunity to meet and set-up communication lines with my clinical group and instructor before being placed in a hospital environment. It was also very helpful having my clinical instructor go over some basic skills so I could get a handle on their personality and teaching style. By interacting with everyone in a low stress environment gave me a better understanding that this semester is a learning experience and to slow down and take my time with the information because no one expects me to be an expert right away. Hopefully this experience will make me more comfortable with requesting help and asking questions, which in turn, will provide a more enriching clinical experience....
