Time when communication in a relationship was good or bad. What features or aspects of communication made it good or bad? My sister and I often have a hard time communicating due to the fact that we are ten years apart. She lives in Texas and I live in South Carolina. We have not seen each other in three years and I recently have tried to develop a better relationship as she just had her first child. She has not reciprocated the same desire to have a relationship, but I am trying. The aspects that make it good are: 

We are family and that draws us closer due to our desire not to disrupt family ties.

We are able to slowly hold conversations longer now that I am older and more mature and she is no longer seeing me as a child.

Being that we are both married and have families to take care of, we have similar issues to discuss.

Aspects that are bad in communication: 

We had no desire to speak previously as some prior family issues were in the way.

Because of our age difference, we grew up in very different generations. We speak differently, act differently, and have difference opinions on issues.

I think to help this relationship we both need to be more open and understanding. We both tend to jump to defensive measures when we feel attacked for what we are saying and we judge each other harshly. I feel like I am constantly being compared to her and personally, I hate it. I don’t like to be compared to her as we are two totally different people. I hope that we can learn to communicate better in the future.

A time when you demonstrated your ability to be open to intercultural differences. When I worked at a Subway, I had several Indian coworkers and managers. My head manager set up a shrine, to say the least, in the back part of the Subway and took up space for our supplies. I did not appreciate being forced to not talk about my religion and having to look at theirs every day. I found that it was inconsiderate and not professional for the work environment. I never brought it up with my manager as I did not want to cause unnecessary issues that were not relevant to my/others work ethics. I was able to learn more about their religious practices and found that it did not bother me as much. I found that it inspired me not to be afraid of my own faith and to be open to learning about other cultures. I appreciate the lesson and tend to use similar experiences further along down the road....
