The Future of Healthcare Management As we have seen throughout this course, technology has increased and is in use in various aspects of the medical field. According to AHIMA, “HIM professionals are increasingly becoming standard-setters for electronic health records; advocates for quality patient records and for patient access and utilization of personal health information; and data experts for collecting, interpreting, and analyzing health information” (AHIMA, 2005). It has been interesting to see the evolution of patient records go from paper to digital in a matter of years thanks to advancement in technology. Clinicians can consult specialist in different parts of the country and world in a matter of minutes with the use of telemedicine. With the advancement of technology also comes the need for tighter security protocols and increased training in both ethics and privacy. HIPAA and the HITECH act have been set in place to help with these concepts. According to the Medical Record Associates, privacy and security as well as coding are both entities currently trending in the medical field (Macias & Grant, 2018). These skillsets prove invaluable for those entering the healthcare industry. HIPAA also provides some insight into privacy and security in its guidelines. The advancement of technology has a positive affect in the field. Medical records are standardized and in a central location. The ability to share information between facilities and clinicians positively affect patient care. Instead of waiting for records to be sent from one provider to another via mail or fax, records may be sent over electronically in a matter of minutes. New procedures and treatments will be available to patients anywhere in the world with telemedicine and information sharing, providing proper security measures are taken to protect PHI.

Reflection One concept that sticks out to me is the Clinical Information System (CIS). According to the ACI, a CIS can network with the many computer systems in a modern hospital, such as pathology and radiology and draws information from all these systems into an electronic patient record, which clinicians can see at the patient’s bedside (ACI, 2015). I have been interested in technology and its various uses. I also have an interest in medicine. Being able to learn how different entities come together in the field is beneficial. There is a possibility that given the right opportunity and experience, I could be working in the healthcare field on the technical side providing training and maintenance of the CIS and other systems. Application The knowledge I obtained of the future of HIM has its benefits. I have learned that with proper training, new systems can become functional and can reduce the workload for professionals. All relevant information can be stored in one location and use one program. The issue of using multiple programs that may or may not communicate with each other will be resolved soon. Paper records will become obsolete and the use of technology will streamline patient care. I currently work in a plastics manufacturing plant. We produce some healthcare products. The information I have learned here has given me a better understanding on how these products may be used once sent to the customer. As for the future, I am looking to get into the medical field in some way down the line. Concepts that will arise will not be foreign to me. I will have the knowledge and understanding of how things work and will have little trouble jumping in. Keeping abreast of new technology and its use in the medical field allows me further my education. Knowledge is power.
