Description

Jacee Espinoza August 29, 2020 Philosophy Journal Entry 1 Select one passage, theme, or topic found within the reading for this week that you found particularly interesting or relevant and write a journal entry in which you answer the following questions: 1.) What exactly do you take to be the point of the passage, theme, or topic in question? 2.) How exactly does this passage make philosophy relevant for you, or provide a broader understanding of the world? Some people can only see what is right in front of them. This is clear through the media because many people take what they see at face value which makes them closed minded. Plato’s allegory of the cave uses symbolism to show how ignorance is a limitation in terms of knowing what is true. In Plato’s reading the prisoners only being able to see one thing, what is right in front of them, represents a closed mind. On this analysis of the allegory, it shows us that with having a closed mind, no one will ever have any real knowledge of the truth. In the text, the confinement represents the closed mind and the stimulation represents society. Because society only wants you to think what they want you never have the free will to think your own thoughts. They do everything in their power to get you to keep your head forward and only see what they are putting on. However, in the moment you do not even realize there is more to see or more knowledge to endure. Socrates states: “…their legs and necks chained so that they cannot move and can only see before them” (Plato). It reveals what it means to be trapped and not be able to have your own thoughts. This philosophy is applicable in the world we live in today. For example, the media. We are the prisoners and the puppet masters are the media. The media only allows us to see the things they want us to see. They only want to give us the knowledge and information they think we need. Some people are so closed minded that they believe what they are told is all the knowledge that is out there. People do not want to go outside of what they are told because it is not normal. It is not normal in today’s society for people to think their own thoughts because they are not right according to people higher up. It is forgotten that there is more out there.
