Tarleton State University School of Nursing NURS 3320 Nursing Research, Inquiry, and Evidenced Based Decision Making

Please reflect on the in class mini experiment: 1) Evaluate the impact the in-class experiment on your understanding of the research process? The in-class experiment really opened my eyes in regard to what all goes into the research process. There are so many factors to keep in mind when researching a topic to ensure that you collect the most accurate and inclusive data, such as different population types and different scenarios for each population… For example, there are more girls than boys in our nursing cohort, but out of the girls we have, at least 3 of them are above 30 years of age and they have children, while also working full time to support their families, while most students in our cohort are between 18 and 25. So it’s important to make the data collection/population inclusive for all groups, keeping in mind other factors such as age, race, gender, employment status, religion, etc. 2) Evaluate the impact of the in-class experiment on your understanding of the nature of statistical analysis? When collecting the data from the surveys created, many different questions are created based on the variants described in the previous question… with that being said, each question and its data will reflect different trends for many reasons, with some being that people are different in many aspects of their life, and those trends with the highest numbers are a reflection of the fact that while many of us are different, some of us are similar and can relate in certain areas based on what is asked in the question. Statistical analysis is interesting because the questions and the way they are asked can significantly impact the results, and when there are factors that are forgotten or left out of the question, it can present inaccurate results because some people can’t relate to any of the available answer choices and therefore have to choose the answer closest to what they relate to. It’s hard to put people into boxes and tell them they can either be A,B, or C but not all of them or none of them, and we found it was easier to ask the questions in a short-answer style so people have an opportunity to explain themselves and their individual situations. This style question, however, is harder to gather data because everyone’s answer is slightly different from the next, and even if answers were similar, it would be very time consuming to read each response and put it into its own category.

3) Evaluate the impact of the in-class experiment on your understanding of the differences between quantitative and qualitative research? The answer above touches a lot on this question, as quantitative is more numerical while qualitative relates more to the answers themselves and how in-depth and explanatory they are to everyone’s unique situation. Quantitative research deals more with statistics and numbers, while qualitative research looks more like those short-answer questions where participants have the opportunity to go in-depth with their answers and can explain their situation, which alternatively makes the datacollection process a bit harder.
