As I began to reflect, I will miss my service leaning because I had a regular routine: I would come in at 10 am, at Madiba Prep Middle School first meet with the founder of JAIA, Gena Jefferson and she would assigned Jessica to work with me about that day’s agenda. We would pick up the girls from their classes, and if we had paperwork for them, we helped them fill it out.

From the beginning of the semester, we have been studying about various types of assessments. When Ms. Jefferson showed me the filing cabinet full of papers, I was exposed to the criteria and the assessment process by which they select those who are eligible to participate in their program.

Ms. Jefferson informed me of the non-profit’s policies and procedures. In the beginning, I was also required to fill out a confidentiality form

As I was talking to Human Resources personnel, I was reminded of the importance of confidentiality. The NASW Code of Ethics requires practicing social workers to keep information about clients, health records and any other data that would reveal anyone’s identity.

Although I have experience working with the youth, there has been many memories. Good and bad ones. The first time I was introduced to the girls, I did not receive a warm welcoming. Two months later for my birthday, the girls surprised me with a birthday card, and a gift card and tons of hugs. I guess they needed to warm up a bit to me, even if its took a couple of Friday’s.

The population served by this agency deals with issues on a micro practice level. Dealing with individuals, family and small groups, family support workers in this agency take on teacher roles and advocate roles, among many others.

I was very pleased of myself because I was able to restate information that the girls would tell me during our mini counseling sessions. Although I could not remember all the information, I was pleased that I remembered the majority of the information, and was able to restate them.

When I listened to the information given to me and was able to remember it. It reminded me of the importance of social workers to practice active listening when listening to clients and the skills associated with it.

During a conversation with another graduate student who was also a intern named Jessica,

The agency is viewed as a system. When the

she informed that at her previous service learning had access to a lot of client information. We spoke about how unsafe it may be for the clients and their information within the agency. I thought about how glad II am not aware of where most of the filled out paperwork was. I am happy to know there’s a policy in place at my work site to eliminate the possibility of that happening at my work site.

Human Resource agent failed to gain an understanding of my purpose there, I thought about the permeability of the system. Although the system allowed me in because I was doing service learning, a sphere of the system failed to understand my role within it. This also connected the importance of policy making that would benefit a volunteer or a student like me that is interested in doing service for that agency....
