Description

7-4 Journal Reflection: Creating a Movement

1. Which social movement did you choose, and what interests you about the movement? The social movement I chose was the Black Lives Matter Movement, since as an African American, it is the most significant movement to make waves. The BLM movement is the most popular movement and has been making strides to make change for blacks/African Americans. With racial discrimination and racial bias repeating itself for decades, this movement brings light to the undertones on what is really happening to our fellow black people.

2. How have you learned about this social movement (news articles, social media, social commentary, conversation with others, television news)? I have learned about this movement from conversations, social media, the news and basically everyway that you can receive information. With everyone wanting to feel included and up to date this is the main movement to get involved in. With the way social media spreads news, the movement was bound to be talked about and blown up into a massive movement. Social media also gives us a quick insight as to what started the BLM movement and also lets us know the finite details if what happened to start the movement as well.

3. What is the “big question” or inquiry that the movement is trying to answer? I think one big question that the BLM movement is trying to answer is, Why are Blacks treated differently just because of the color of their skin? Racial inequality is the reason the BLM movement was even created due to the mistreatment of African Americans.

4. What do you think has caused the movement to gain or lose momentum? How does this movement either directly or indirectly impact your day-to-day life? For example, if you are looking at the environmental movement, maybe you were directly impacted by a tax break for purchasing a new Prius or putting new energyefficient windows in your home. I think the biggest thing to make this movement gain momentum, is the brutality from law enforcement, not necessarily just police. However, racial inequality was still in play but when someone dies, it spreads a harsh light on the cruel reality of the situation. Social media has also made this movement gain momentum by spreading awareness to the cause and letting the world know what is going on....
