In “Rethinking Humanity” written by Jeilin Yu, Jeilin discusses about the debate on human-animal chimeras. When I read this, I thought this topic was very interesting. It reminded me of the show Teen Wolf. This show consists of many human-animal chimeras that would fight one another in order to get what they wanted which was to destroy each other’s species, so only they could survive. In the essay, Jeilin talks about animal tests and how it raises ethical challenges along with financial. Using animals such as mice gives us inaccurate results because of the differences between us and humans, so making animal-human chimeras, this would help us because between humans and human-animal chimeras, we have more similarities which would give us more accurate results. Although using human-animal chimeras as a source to help better the human population due to the similarities, bioethicists argue that being a chimera jeopardizes personhood, which is having self-consciousness and autonomy. Bioethicists say that they obtain a certain level of personhood, but not full. I thought this was really interesting because in my medical ethics class, we talked about the criteria of personhood and what is means to be a person. I learned the meaning and the criteria of personhood should be more defined such as that anyone can fit into the criteria, but in a different sense and level. For example, a person who is intellectuality disable may not have the best autonomy, but are they still considered to be a person? Of course, but at a different level like the human-animal chimeras. Overall, I thought this topic and essay was really interesting because it was something that I have never read or thought about; So, I thought it was very unique and different in my opinion....
