1.1 Student participation requirements The JCU Learning, Teaching and Assessment Procedures (2.1.2d) indicates a typical student workload for a three (3) credit point subject requires a 130 hour work load of study related activities, including attendance, assessment and self-directed study over the duration of the subject with equivalency across all modes of delivery. Note that attendance at specified classes will be a mandatory requirement for satisfactory completion of some subjects (Learning, Teaching and Assessment Procedures, 3.1.8e); and that additional hours may be required per week for those students in need of English language, numeracy or other learning support. Subject details

2.1 Subject description This subject introduces students to the application of the principles of person centred care. Skills in assisting with activities of daily living to maintain patient independence are developed. The techniques of physical and mental health assessment are practiced in a simulated setting.

2.2 Subject learning outcomes and course learning outcomes Students who successfully complete this subject will be able to: •

demonstrate techniques used to assess physical and mental health



describe the precautions necessary to maintain a safe environment for the patient, the nurse and colleagues



demonstrate proficiency in the performance of essential nursing skills



outline the principles of person centred care and its application across the lifespan



apply the Registered Nurse standards for practice in the provision of evidence-based nursing care in a simulated environment.

These outcomes will contribute to your overall achievement of course learning outcomes. 2.3 Learning and teaching in this subject Blended learning is the teaching strategy used in this subject. The blended learning approach comprises text and web-based information, together with access to video-podcasts and other materials loaded onto LearnJCU. This is to assist students to learn in a creative and flexible manner. Internal students will engage in online Blackboard Collaborate tutorials and face-to-face workshops which are designed to be active learning sessions where subject content is discussed and explored. Mixed attendance students will have access to online Blackboard Collaborate sessions and a 3 day residential block. Learning and teaching activities may be recorded for this subject. Personal Information in the form of images and audio may be collected by JCU during the recording. This personal information may appear as part of the recording which is accessible to students and staff in this subject on LearnJCU. NS1881 learning and teaching strategies are student-centred. Students are encouraged to actively engage in learning processes and take responsibility for their learning. Emphasis is placed on skills required to effectively use and integrate technology into the learning environment. In NS1881 you will engage in a variety of learning experiences using different formats including: • directed learning via lectures, specific readings within textbooks, journals and online sources, LearnJCU simulated activities, preparatory and reflective activities; • demonstrations of clinical skills and opportunities to develop and consolidate these skills within workshop sessions, and self-directed learning (SDL) in the nursing laboratory; and • discussion with workshop facilitators and peers. On Campus Clinical Workshop Guidelines 1. Nursing and Midwifery uniform must be worn to all on campus clinical workshops. The prescribed uniform is the only type students are permitted to wear. No home-made uniforms are allowed. Students with incorrect uniform are not permitted entry to the labs and make-up work is required. Please note:

you must wear closed-in footwear that is impermeable to sharps and fluids to each nursing and midwifery on campus clinical workshop. Students with incorrect footwear will not be permitted entry to the laboratories and make-up work will be required. 2. Standard precautions are to be maintained while working in labs. Potentially contaminated items must be disposed correctly. In particular, correct procedures must be followed when disposing of syringes, sharps and needles. 3. Hand hygiene must be performed every time you enter or leave labs; and the National Hand Hygiene Initiative five moments for hand hygiene must be adhered during labs. 4. Conservation of equipment is encouraged. There is a quota on the amount of disposable equipment each student may use. 5. Eating is not permitted in labs. 6. Mobile phones are not permitted in the labs. 7. Please do not remove equipment from labs without permission. 8. Laboratories must be left clean (as per COVID19 guidelines) and tidy at the end of each session. 9. Should any accidents or ‘near misses’ occur, report these to Clinical Simulation staff.

2.4 Student feedback on subject and teaching As part of our commitment at JCU to improving the quality of our courses and teaching, we regularly seek feedback on your learning experiences. Student feedback informs evaluation of subject and teaching strengths and areas that may need refinement or change. 2.5 Subject resources and special requirements All subject readings and resources, including journal articles, book chapters, websites, videos, print and eTextbooks, are available to view online from your Readings list via your LearnJCU subject site. Textbooks are listed in your Readings list, including links to library holdings. The JCU Library has limited print copies of prescribed textbooks for two-day loan, and options for viewing available eTextbooks online. Additionally, you can find the most appropriate library subject resources, including dedicated discipline-specific Library Guides, relevant databases and access to library services and staff through the Your Library tool, in your LearnJCU subject site. Students enrolled in the online or mixed attendance modes for this subject require reliable internet and computing facilities, including a webcam suitable for undertaking invigilated assessments via Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor.

2.5.1 Preparing for Professional Experience Placement Professional experience placement may be a formal component of your course. Placement prepares you for registration and/or accreditation as a professional in your field and supports you to be 'work ready' when you leave university. Students may be required to undertake such placements away from the campus at which they are enrolled, at their own expense, as per the JCU Enrolment Policy – Coursework Students. As a JCU professional experience student it is your responsibility to ensure all pre-placement requirements (PPRs) are met within the prescribed timeframe as per the Professional Experience Placement Requirements Procedure, otherwise sanctions may be applied to your enrolment in the course. Please visit the Professional Experience Placement website to access comprehensive details, checklists, policy and forms and refer to the Professional Experience Placement Handbook: Everything you need to know about PEP for detailed information regarding pre-placement requirements. Please ensure you have hard copy evidence of completion of all pre-placement documents with you during your PEP. Facilities may ask to review these documents.
