INTRODUCTION

DESCRIPTION

Malnutrition is a common health condition which when the individuals diet does not provide enough nutrients or the right balance of nutrients for optimal health. Usually it’s affect the health of the children showing symptoms such as not growing, being overweight or underweight and low energy. This is the one of the most common causes of the decline in the health and life of children, which results in decreased learnability, inefficiency, and inability to acquire skills. Poor nutrition during childhood can have a irreversible effect on the physical and mental development that might eventually affects the child performance in school such as being unproductive and inability to learn. According to the State of the World’s Children: Children, Food and Nutrition revealed that one in three Filipino children under five year’s old are stunted which mean means they are too short for their age, while roughly 7 percent of children are too thin for their height. Poverty is the leading cause of malnutrition, and at a time when we are facing a pandemic due to the COVID-19 virus, it has gotten worse because many businesses and industries have closed to prevent the virus from spreading, and many people have lost their jobs. They do not have a job that allows them to support their family. They don't even eat on a daily basis since they can't afford to buy healthy meals. As a result, the family members, particularly the youngsters, become malnourished. In Barangay Darasa, Tanauan City in the province of Batangas, we found out that there are a lot of malnourished children. The proponent creates a program that helps the children in the said barangay have a good nutritional status. With this project, the proponent is going to conduct a feeding session for the children, which will be assisted by the staff with the help of barangay officials and the parents of the children. There is also a symposium that will tackle how to prevent malnutrition. The organizers are going to invite one health professional, like a nurse or doctor, to become a guest speaker at the said symposium. To be successful in this project, the proponent is going to conduct a fund raise to collect money and use it as a budget for feeding and other things that may be related to the said project.

OBJECTIVES The general purpose of the project is to raise awareness and improve the health status of the chosen Barangay. Towards the end, the following objectives are set: 1. To increase the knowledge of the residents on the advantage of balanced diet and nutrition. 2. To assist the said barangay in combating hunger in their community through a feeding program and a symposium on the need of a nutritionally balanced diet. 3. To improve the overall health status of children’s in Brgy. Darasa.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS The main focus of this study is to raise awareness and increase the knowledge of a balanced diet among the residents of Brgy. Darasa, Tanauan in the Province of Batangas. It seeks to improve the overall health status of children’s, lower the malnutrition in the said barangay and increase the knowledge of mothers and care takers about the different food groups and how they can be combined to make a balanced diet. Overall, this project will focus on improving the nutritional health status of children in Brgy. Darasa. In this case, the researchers are not going to discuss other problems in the barangay to deal with-aside from raising awareness, improving the health of children’s and assess the knowledge of the parents on how locally available food is prepared and served in order to maintain good nutrition.

METHODOLOGY This chapter includes the research approach, collection of data, area of the study, participants of the study and the overall strategy utilized by the team. The team‘s center of attention was on raising awareness about healthy diet and the malnourished people in the stated barangay. They also paid attention to the possibilities and limitations that they might encounter during the project. The proponents will go to Brgy. Darasa, Tanauan Batangas to offer the said proposal. It will be followed by an interview with the Barangay’s key informants, primarily the authorities. Then, a survey with a set of questions about the health and nutrition of children in the community will be undertaken among a selected group of respondents within the Barangay. Following the gathering of necessary information, all project requirements will be prepared, including the barangay permit, venue, facilitator, participants, required materials, and a time plan, to ensure a successful and well-organized project flow. In response to the global epidemic we are experiencing, the project will be implemented on time and in accordance with the minimum health protocols. At the end of the project, proponents will ask for the support of the Barangay Official to make this project continuously implemented in the community.

RESEARCH APPROACH The team mainly focused on aiding malnutrition in the said barangay by the means of feeding program and symposium about nutritional balanced diet. The team used qualitative data collection, according to Pritha Bandari (1997) qualitative research methods and non-numerical focuses on discovering and understanding the experiences, perspectives and thoughts of participants. It is subjective in nature. It is useful when you want to determine skills, opinions , knowledge and capability of people. FIGURES In the self-constructed questionnaire, the proponents also constructed a five-point rating scale to assess the answers of the selected respondents. 5 – point Likert scale, with “strongly agree”

6

(SA) as the highest rating and “strongly disagree” (SD) as the lowest, was utilized. Subjects were then advised to respond to their degree of agreement with the statements contained in the instrument. The mean ranges and their interpretations are expressed below: Numerical Rating Scale

PROJECT DESIGN To gather the information needed in the project, descriptive research method was used. Specifically, the questionnaire type of descriptive research method was utilized by the proponents, so that the respondents won’t have any difficulties in answering the questions required for the researchers to have information regarding the health status and awareness of residents in Brgy. Darasa, Tanauan Batangas.

SUMMARY According to World Health Organization, around 45% of deaths among children under 5 years of age are linked to under nutrition. These mostly occur in low- and middle-income countries. At the same time, in these same countries, rates of childhood overweight and obesity are rising. With proven results, a lot of malnourished children need a support and help in order to have the proper nutrients at their age. By on this project, it would be a big help to the residents of Barangay Darasa to better know the importance of nutrition to the overall health of an individual. Moreover, this will also help the Barangay to know the situation of their community in terms of hunger. Having the proper nutrition can make our daily function better.
