Transition to Nursing Practice, NURS4210

Course Description: This course focuses on the synthesis concepts essential to the role of the entry-level Registered Nurse, as a contributing member of the healthcare team. Personal, ethical, and legal aspects of nursing care are discussed along with issues and trends in nursing practice affecting the delivery of health care and the discipline of the professional practice of nursing. During this course the student will have a participant observer experience at a healthcare setting. This experience provides the student with the opportunity to further develop his/her role as an entry level Registered Nurse and facilitate the transition from nursing student to professional nurse. NURS 4210 students tackle current nursing practice issues and produce evidence based presentations and scholarly papers to support their findings. NURS 4210 facilitates the ATI comprehensive review to prepare students to achieve a benchmark of Level 2. A grade of C+ or better is required to pass the course and be eligible for graduation. Prerequisites: Open only to students enrolled in the traditional BSN program. CHEM1001, BIOL2503, BIOL2504, BIOL2502 with a C or better in all prerequisite science courses, MATH1200, MATH2200, INFO1001, EXSC3105, NURS3002, NURS2103, NURS2400, NURS3003, NURS3200, NURS3300, NURS3400, NURS3100, NURS3305, NURS3600, and NURS4403. Corequisites: NURS4901, NURS4200, and an open elective course. Course Learning Outcomes: The successful student completing NURS4210 will be able to: 1. Synthesize prior knowledge from the sciences, humanities, and nursing to transition to the role of the senior undergraduate nursing students and the graduate baccalaureate prepared nurse. (Evidence based practice) 2. Apply leadership and management principles in the provision of safe, high quality nursing care. (Leadership) 3. Evaluate current research and evidence-based nursing practice knowledge to create individualized solutions to nursing practice problems. (Quality improvement) 4. Describe communication, collaboration and advocacy skills needed to deliver safe and effective nursing care. (Communication) 5. Analyze the ethical/legal/professional responsibility components of a nursing practice issue. (Professionalism)

LATE ASSIGNMENTS: 5 Points per day will be deducted from late assignments.

Assignment Descriptions: Written assignment rubrics, and guidelines for completing the assignments posted on the NURS4210 CANVAS LMS website in the Modules section. Comprehensive Predictor ATI exam (25%) This benchmarked exam recommends students to achieve a level 2 in order to support NCLEX success. Student’s grade is for first attempt. Students are required to self-remediate with the support of ATI resources and faculty oversight to achieve a level two before graduation. Introduction to the topic Formulating a Clinical Question PICO Format and Evidence-based Practice Literature Search Critical Analysis of the Literature Synthesizing the Literature Recommendations for Evidence-based Practice Discussion and Implications

Purpose: Provide students with an opportunity to: (1) Express themselves cogently in writing on a topic to illustrate implications of legal accountability, professional integrity, ethical responsibility, caring and advocacy essential to professional nurses,

(2) Demonstrate meeting at least one course learning outcome and (3) Analyze the literature to determine and discuss nursing implications to nurse/nursing, family, staff, facility and society. The paper must meet criteria for a scholarly research paper as described in the APA Manual. Students must cite all sources in the paper that are not the original idea of the student writer. Plagiarism may result in a zero for the paper. If a student is required to redo a paper because of plagiarism, the highest score the student can earn on the rewrite of the paper is 77%. All spelling and grammatical errors must be corrected before submitting the paper. The rubric for grading is posted on the course CANVAS LMS website.

Poster Presentation of Professional Practice Issue (10%) The Poster Presentation on a literature review of a topic professional nursing practice issue that is selected at the beginning of the semester and thoroughly researched throughout the semester. Purpose: Provide students an opportunity to 1) express themselves orally in a cogent manner, 2) analyze a professional nursing practice issue with evidence based literature findings and 3) demonstrate understanding of the ethical-legal professional responsibilities, accountability, integrity and caring of the professional nurse as they relate to patient-centered care. The Poster Presentation should be 10 minutes including time for questions and discussion at Senior Showcase, DATE/TIME TBA. Student are encouraged to use the requirements of the Scholarly Paper part of this project to guide the set-up of the poster presentation. Students are encouraged to be creative in the presentation. The presentation must include (1) the key concepts/themes of the topic with an emphasis on applied nursing implications.

ATI Homework Self Remediation (25%) Students are will complete all assigned ATI homework on time to receive credit for assignment. Assignments will be submitted electronically before the beginning of class on Fridays. Student will be expected to present topics in class. Any late assignments will receive Zero grade.

Bi weekly discussion assignments (20%) The discussion format will challenge students to secure knowledge pertaining to nursing leadership styles and explore issues that affect the new graduate nurse’s transition to practice. Attendance & course evaluation completion (5%) Attendance and engagement in this course is key to secure success. Course evaluations are important assessments to provide feedback on the course content and delivery, course evaluations provides continuous quality improvement. . Professional Conduct Refer to Becker College Department of Nursing Student Handbook, for detailed program policies. All nursing students will maintain professional conduct consistent with the American Nursing Association (2015) six Standards of Nursing Practice and the eleven Standards of Professional Practice as defined in

the American Nurses Association (2015) Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, 3rd edition, Silver Spring, MD. The Standards can be found in the Becker College Nursing Program Student Handbook, Course and Classroom Etiquette Students are expected to present to live or virtual class on time, fully prepared for the learning experience. Students will treat classmates and faculty with respect at all times. Failure to do so will result in removal from the classroom, clinical, or the skill lab setting. Student(s) will address the faculty with the academic title and surname within the nursing program. Cell phones, smart watches and other electronic communication devices must be turned off and secured in student’s backpacks. Students on an educational plan will be accommodated per the approved educational plan. Any student wishing to audio record lecture must obtain permission from the lecturer. This permission must be obtained prior to every lecture. Due to the nature of clinical discussions and HIPPA guidelines the lecturer may request that recording be ceased at any point during the lecture.
