UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE SCHOOL OF NURSING GRADUATE PROGRAM FALL 2021 COURSE NUMBER/TITLE: NURS 405-01-4128 Child Health COURSE DESCRIPTION: Presents essential concepts, theories, and developmental processes fundamental in understanding the acute & chronic health concerns and problems of children and their families. COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. Examine selected family theories and structures and their influence on children’s health and development. 2. Explain selected health promotion concepts and health deviations in children and accurately assess their effect on children and their families. 3. Discuss significant social, cultural, political, economic, ethical, legal, and environmental factors affecting acute and chronic care of children. 4. Select, implement, and evaluate relevant evidence-based practice interventions in the care of acute and chronically ill children care in a variety of settings. 5. Describe in depth the impact of social and cultural factors on health disparities in children. 6. Differentiate among significant genetic disorders and their impact on children’s health outcomes. CREDIT HOURS: 4 (3 didactic/1 clinical) hours Per university guidelines, a student is expected to spend at least two-and-one-half hours (2.5 hours) of out-of classroom time per week for each credit hour. DAY AND TIME OF CLASS: Mondays 1:00-3:50pm (ET). DATES AND LOCATION OF CLASS: August 23- December 14, 2021, HK 2010. TIME AND DAY/DATES OF CLINICAL: Clinical Wednesdays at specified times, August 25November 17, 2021. CLINICAL EXPERIENCES: Clinical is expected to take place in the hospital, in a prescribed pediatric extended care facility, a pediatric day care (Head Start) facility, and via simulation. All clinical experiences are conducted with a group preceptor. Depending on clinical location, hours of clinical may be from 6am-4pm. See Blackboard for the schedule for each clinical group. It is expected that students be prepared on all clinical days. Students are expected to follow the School of Nursing’s dress code and other specific dress and behavior requirements as directed. Students whose appearance, dress, and behavior do not adhere to standards will be asked to leave clinical. Students must always wear their name tag with name and picture identification badges (Cardinal card and name tag) that identify them as students. Students meeting any clients for the first time are to introduce themselves and their student affiliation (University of Louisville). Students should not enter into verbal or written contracts as a representative of the University of Louisville, School of Nursing. Tardiness represents unprofessional behavior and is unacceptable. Tardiness to the clinical experience may constitute grounds for course failure. Attendance is mandatory. The clinical faculty must be notified in advance if the student will either be late or unable to attend the clinical experience. Failure to notify the clinical faculty in advance of the tardiness or absence may result in the consequences mentioned previously. Rationale: Clinical is an integral part of the curriculum and essential for practice. In the age of technology, the instance is rare when a student would be unable to contact the faculty in advance of an absence. CLINICAL EXPECTATIONS/EVALUATION CRITERIA: Clinical compliance is expected. The SON MEPN Student Handbook states "A student continuing a clinical experience while being out of compliance with any health/clinical requirement will be subject to dismissal from the program." It is the student’s responsibility to know and maintain clinical compliance throughout the semester. Occasionally, a student will be in compliance with all clinical requirements at the beginning of the semester, but a requirement will outdate during the semester. Students must be responsible for completing the update/renewal in a timely manner and providing the appropriate documentation to the Office of Student Services. If a student continues to attend clinical while out of compliance, the School of Nursing is not in compliance 3

with agency contracts. This is a serious offense and the student WILL BE DISMISSED from the School of Nursing. Students will be given a mid-rotation and final evaluation of their clinical performance. Kentucky Nursing Statute (KRS 314) COURSE AND FACULTY EVALUATIONS: All students will have the opportunity to evaluate the course and faculty. GRADING SCALE: The following grading system is in effect for all courses in the MEPN Program. This grading system is in accordance with the Graduate School at the University of Louisville. 98-100 A+ 77-79 C+ 59 or Below F 93-97 A 73-76 C 90-92 A70-72 C87-89 B+ 67-69 D+ 83-86 B 63-66 D 80-82 B60-62 D*A grade below a B- is a failing grade in the MEPN program. Rounding is only used in courses for the calculation of the weighted exam average and the final course grade. At the end of the semester, weighted exam averages and final course grades will be rounded up if the final number is 0.50 or greater. Any score of 0.49 or lower will be rounded down. For example, at the end of the semester, a final grade of 74.50 will be rounded to a 75; whereas, a final grade of 74.49 will not be rounded up, so the final grade will be a 74.

To successfully complete/pass the course students must: (Include all that apply to the particular course)     

Achieve at least a 75% weighted average on the written examinations*; Submit/complete all required assignments by deadline dates; Achieve a satisfactory final clinical evaluation**; and Complete the ATI assessment, according to proficiency requirements (see ATI section) Complete the entire 1.5 contact hours of content over pediatric abusive head trauma, as required by KRS 620.020.
