The nurse teaches the patient with valvular heart disease about: o Diagnosis o Progressive nature of valvular disease o Treatment plan Teach patient to report new symptoms or changes in symptoms to the HCP Teach patient that the infectious agent, usually a bacterium, is able to adhere to the diseased heart valve more readily than to a normal valve o Results in Endocarditis o Further damage to the heart valve o Teach the patient how to minimize risk of developing Infective Endocarditis Teach client about the importance of attempting to relieve the symptoms of angina with rest and relaxation before taking the nitroglycerin Risk to patients with aortic stenosis who experience angina and take nitro o Venous dilation that results from nitro decreases blood return to the heart, thus decreasing CO and increasing the risk of syncope and decreased coronary artery blood flow Teach patient to weight daily o Report gains of 2 pounds in 1 day or 5 pounds in a week Measure patients: o HR o BP o Respiratory rate o Compare results with previous data and note any changes Auscultate heart sounds Auscultate lung sounds Palpate peripheral pulses Develop medication schedule The nurse assess the patient with valvular disease for the following conditions: o S/S of HF such as: fatigue dyspnea increase in cough hemoptysis multiple respiratory infections orthopnea PND o Dysthymias: Palpating the patients pulse for strength and rhythm Asking whether the patient has experienced palpations or felt forceful heartbeat o Symptoms such as dizziness, syncope, increased weakness or angina pectoralis...
