Case study: Predicting Harry’s work effort 1. Use expectancy theory model to predict Harry’s motivation to achieve high or “just acceptable” performance in his job? Harry is highly motivated with the job when he is given promotion or secure workplace. Motivation is defined as the combination of desire and energy of a person to achieve the goal. Specifically, in the case “Predicting Harry’s work effort, we can easily see that he wants to be secured with the job irrespective of the raise and promotion he gets for performing well at work. -

E-to-P Expectancy: Harry shows to interviewer the need of affiliation. He mentioned that he doesn’t want his buddies to make fun of him because his performance is also based on that. What is more, he tries very hard to project a favorable image of himself toward others without standing out or trying to prove his ability. Additionally, he illustrates his need of achievement: the most important thing that he wants at a workplace is job security. To his desire, getting a raise in company’s position is crucial but what is more important is promotion. This is one of the most important motivation that help him to put more effort and perform better at work cause he thinks that promotion makes his effort becomes more valuable and his attempt be recognized.

P-to-O Expectancy: Because of the fact that he doesn’t want his peers make fun of him, he doesn’t want to work too hard or perform in a superior way in comparison with other colleagues. In addition, he is certain that his job is secure no matter how he performs such as high performance or acceptable performance. He has a high potential of effort and talents because of what he performed in period jobs. He mentions that the chance of his performance being high is about 90 percent with high level of effort. In contrast, when he

puts out a low effort, the chances of his doing acceptable job is still approximately 80 percent. -

Outcome valences: Valence is the anticipated satisfaction or dissatisfaction that an individual feels toward an outcome. To Harry’s opinion, getting raise would have a value of .5; a promotion is more important, which is about .7; and having his buddies make fun of him could be -.9. Those are factors that he thinks can influence his work performance positively or negatively. Furthermore, he would do better if he can make sure that his job is secured.

2. Identify and discuss the factors that influence this motivation? There are many factors that influence Harry’s motivation. It includes both advantages and disadvantages that related to his job’s performance. To begin with, there is a significant factor that has a negative impact on his performance. Specifically, he doesn’t want to stand out because he thinks that his peers will make fun of him, which by far can directly affect execution at work. This is the reason why he just wants to finish his job that is acceptable without a high level of effort. What is more, there are several positive factors that have an enormous impact on his performance. The primary factor of this is getting a raise, which for him has a value of .5 out of .1. Another considerable factor is promotion, which accounts for .7 out of .1 on the level of Harry’s work satisfaction....
