ABC COMPANY, INC. CASE STUDY 5.4

ABC Company, Inc. Case Study The company has been around for ten years with a workforce of approximately fifty employees and has only been in a single location during its years of operation, not expanding of additional locations can be found. The company is striving to be the leader in the production and creation of widgets. Rouse (2015, para 1) states that a widget “is a element of a graphical user interface that displays information or provides a specific way for a user to interact with the operating system or an application.” Widgets give the user a wide array of information such as stock prices for the Ney York Stock Exchange, weather forecast, and individual workforce schedules just to give a couple of examples. While the company is wanting to be a driving force with widgets, the sales of those items, are steady, however it is only a small percentage of the company’s revenue. Additional issues within the organization itself are the high turnover rate which appears to be linked directly to both management and lack of communication. Communication issues within an organization can cause substantial issues within the organization. Finally, in terms of economical fallout and widgets continually advancing in development, the company would be need to consider expanding the company, and they should consider that expansion to be a global expansion so they can be competitive with the world market. However, even before the organization makes a decision about the level of expansion that they are willing to do, the issues of communication and organizational management has to be addressed, if it is not addressed, they will not be able to achieve the necessarily goals for the organization.

Upon completely a comprehensive review of the organizations background and seeing that there is a current need for the organization to expand their location globally in order to stay being competitive with other organizations with the sale of widgets, additionally it is also clear that there are issues within the leadership of the organization. This would include both executive and middle management. Upon evaluating information in regard to issues with management, it has been uncovered, there is a problem with communication, respect, and trust of the organizations management team, which is should be considered to be a critical problem within the organization. According to the information given, although the organizational president is an older gentleman, he is rarely ever seen at the organization, Decisions that are made by the president are made over the phone during meeting that are held over the phone, and again they are not made in person at all. While working from home; remoting working has started to become more popular with organizations, including the ABC Company, however, when you see a lack of executive management in the office, then you start to see doubts and lack of confidence start to create a domino effect with middle management and eventually will get down to the level of employees. However, the simple act of the executive management making their face seem and conducting at least some of the business in a face-to-face meeting at the office, would make an impact with the work environment and help with rebuilding respect, trust and rebuilding effective communication within the organization. Judge (2013, pg. 25) states “Trustworthiness can be thought of as the quality of someone being competent and benevolent so that others can safely be in partnership with that person.” There is a considerable lack of trust between the president of the organization and the rest of the organizational management team, this also means that there is also a lack of respect within the organization as well. In order for the organizational to have a successful expansion on a global level, the respect, trust and ability to communication

between levels of management and between management and the organizational workforce. This will lead to a working environment that is positive and fosters better channel for communication. Increasing the communication will also decrease the likely hood of the both middle managers and other departments developing silo mentality. During the comprehensive review of the overall organization and specifically looking at the middle level management, rarely have interaction with each other, primarily only interacting at meetings. Therefore, they are focused only on what is happening within their respective departments. When an organization is experiencing soli mentality, what is happening is that while everyone works for the same organization, anyone outside of a particular department is not getting the information, but rather that information is staying localized within the department (Harris, 2018). This creates an issue as it shows that the middle management of the organization not only isolated their own department, but they also largely only focus on issues, problems, and concerns that they have within their own department. Therefore, the company’s goal and initiatives are not being prioritized, instead the departments priorities are is what are being meet. This has to be corrected in order for the organization to be competitive on global scale. The finally issue is that there is a critical break down in the communication process within this organization, and this breakdown of communication has created an extremely toxic workplace environment. In order for there to be a successful organization expansion on a global scale, the communication issue is going to be critical to have resolved. Additionally, personnel that are positioned in key positions within the organization are going to have to take accountable for the issues that are occurring with the organization and start working to reverse the communication issues to ensure a successful expansion.

Key People in the Organization In terms of key positions for the organization, this would be the entire leadership team of the organization. The leadership team would be extensively involved in the global expansion of their organization. It is also critical that the right people are in the right positions in the organization at the right time to ensure the successful expansion of the organization, and start moving the organization forward to meet its strategic goals (Managing Organizational Change, 2020). Leadership and management should be able to have conversations with their direct reports to make sure that everyone is going to the same direction with the impending expansion is that is going to occur with the organization. The recommendation would be to have one-on-one conversation with team members instead of doing a single large group meeting. This will always the team members to ask questions and for management to make sure that the team member as a clear understanding of why the changes are happening. Additionally, this also allows the team members questions without worry of judgement from peers (Managing Organizational Change, 2020). When organizational leadership and management bring communication down to a personal level, it helps rebuild respect and trust from the team members within the organization. Additionally, it will help dissolve any of the silo mentality that may have been previously established due to lack of communication in the past. Ultimately, the organizational leadership, their direct reports, and any other teams within the organization will be responsible for ensuring that change that is coming to the organization is successful.
