What "is Performance"? Performance is a certain thing which goes on a stage or when a political figure gives a speech that has been prepared and written. Performances are those things which are staged in front of a large audience, for example, dance performance, skit performance, singing performance, etc... What is "as Performance"? Richard Schechner postulated that performance is any behaviour that is 'twice-behaved'or 'restored.' According to him, performances are human actions or events that have been constructed through a multi-stage process: they have been rehearsed and prepared, and are then 'framed, presented, highlighted or displayed' in a heightened fashion. Any given performance has a history—it is the result of processes of learning and transmission that have preceded and may succeed) it. Performance is the second (or third or fourth…) presentation of a practised act. In a nutshell, anything can be considered 'as performance', in other words when we begin to apply the methods of analysis of performance studies, we can apply it to any phenomenon we wish to, we can apply it to how a room is organized, an art exhibit, how a supper is eaten, etc... It means that we take a phenomenon and we begin to ask performance questions of it such as what is happening, what is the sequence, how it's happening, how has it been prepared, has it been rehearsed, what do people wear or how is the space decorated, these are performance type questions...
