OT Timeline End of 18th century and first half of 19th  

Moral treatment and Reform movement- purpose was to cure, not confine people who were mentally ill, and treated them with compassion and respect Treatment included work and leisure activities

End of 19th century   

Interested in scientifically based treatment methods Blending of science and psychotherapy lead to occupational therapy Settlement houses- provide social services to immigrants o Activities with immigrants were curative because they were meaningful and purposeful

Early 20th century (Arts and crafts movement)   

Encourage creativity, individuality, and craftsmanship Now believed that people with disabilities could participate in society Doing meaningful occupations leads to healthier living

World War I   

 

Wounded soldiers- treatment involved rebuilding self-esteem by engaging in occupations OTs went from only working with the mentally ill to also rehabilitating physically ill peopleworked with tuberculosis patients 1917- National Society for the Promotion Occupational Therapy o Contributed to belief that occupation was important for health and healing o Beginning of the profession in the United States o Founding Vision- melding occupation with science Soldiers Rehabilitation Act of 1918- provide vocational rehab for injured veterans Civilian Vocational Rehabilitation Act of 1920- provide vocational service to nonmilitary people with physical disabilities

1920s 

1923- AOTA adopted the Minimum Standards for Courses of Training in Occupational Therapy o Standardized training- criteria for admission into programs, program length, course contents

1930s  

OT spread internationally 1931- first national registry for qualified OT practitioners

World War II  

21 new training programs established because of demand for military hospital personnel To meet soldiers’ needs, treatment went from crafts to functional skills training  qqProfessional journal made to send out information

Rehabilitation Movement (1942-1960)   

1945- had to pass a registration exam to be an occupational therapist Move from general practitioner to specialized Late 1950s- OTAs emerged

1960s    

Recognized need for occupational therapists Profession moved away from arts and crafts and holism, towards physical treatments Wanted to use both art and science in OT 1965- Medicare program enacted o AOTF formed- promoted research hand OT through financial support

1970s 

 

Rehabilitation Act of 1973- programming, service delivery, development of a set of delivery standards, research, and civil rights for people with disabilities o OTs were in great demands to meet mandates for this act 1975- OTs started working with children o Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EHA) of 1975 Handicapped Infants and Toddlers Act of 1976- free educational programming for preschoolers (age 3-5) and children under the age of 3 o Occupational therapists worked with children and more in school settings

1980s 

Technology-Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1988- use of assistive technology and services for people with disabilities, funds these services

1990s  



Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA)- ensures civil rights and expanded specialized practices in OT Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 1991 (IDEA)- students with disabilities required to be educated in the least restrictive environment as possible o Students with disabilities are educated with students without disabilities o Assistive technology and related services (including OT) provided by school districts Balanced Budget Act of 1997- balanced spending for healthcare

21st century  

Number of practitioners and number of accredited programs increasing Centennial vision

OTA Timeline 1950s  

1956- AOTA added a new level of practitioner…occupational therapy assistant o Scope of roles and responsibilities created 1957- course of study for OTAs mainly focused on psychiatry

1960s    

OTAs went through three month training program in designated facility Coursework and specialty skills with supervised clinical experience 1965- pilot educational program for OTAs leading to dual certification in general and psychiatric practice Since then, OTA students must complete a two year associates degree from an accredited college or university program

1970s    

1970- military personnel who have worked as an occupational therapy technician for at least twelve months and were recommended by an OT were eligible to become a COTA 1973- COTAs that have two years of experience can take the OT certification exam (Career Mobility Program) 1976- OTAs given full AOTA membership and full voting rights 1977- written certification exam written

1980s 

1982- CMP ended

1990s  

1991- AOTA started an OTA networking committee 1997- Advanced Practitioner program- increased status of OTA as viable partner in the health care field

21st century 

AOTA scope of practice o Graduated from an accredited OTA program o Completed supervised field work required by educational institution o Passed the national certification exam for OTAs...
