Dramatic irony is a literary technique, originally used in Greek tragedy, by which the full significance of a character's words or actions is clear to the audience or reader although unknown to the character.
Iago says this line to Roderigo at the start of the play as he explains that he secretly hates Othello and is plotting against him. Although everyone, including Othello, believes that Iago is a loyal and devoted friend, Iago understands the strategic advantage that false friendship gives him. As a trusted confidante, he is able to sway Othello’s opinion and manipulate him much more effectively. The dramatic irony lets the audience see that from the moment the action begins, Iago is already looking for ways to bring about Othello’s downfall.
This is dramatic irony as the audience is now aware of Iago’s plans to bring Othello down.
