Whether it is the finance, technology, engineering, construction, education or healthcare sector, achieving the goals and executing the associated tasks successfully are the same for all: through project management. Project management has become one of the most popular tools for organizations (public and private) to improve internal operations, respond to external opportunities rapidly, and streamline new product development. This course simultaneously presents the general principles of project management while addressing specific examples across a wide range of applications from various disciplines. Students in the class may come from different departments and faculties. Therefore the course will deal with project management concepts in a holistic, integrated fashion whereby students can explore via class discussion both technical and managerial challenges. Although the course will focus on individual project execution, it will also stress the strategic advantage perspective. We introduce students to Project Planning and Control using Microsoft Project Professional 2019. Five themes are covered: (1) Schedule: work breakdown structure (WBS), CPM/PERT, task networks, and dependencies; (2) Budget: budgeting, earned value analysis (EVA), and cost control; (3) Change: schedule changes, costs and constraints, and resource re-allocation; (4) Risk: risk identification, risk networks, cost consequences, and risk mitigation strategies; (5) Control: monitoring and baseline comparison, auditing and root-cause analysis, project escalation, and project termination criteria.

LEARNING OUTCOMES The main objective of this course is to provide students with a good understanding of project management concepts and prepare them for the first level PMI exam. To that effect, the primary goals of the course are: 1. To understand basic project management concepts and explain how they are related. 2. To demonstrate their ability to compute project scheduling using the critical path method. 3. To scope a project. 4. To produce documentation as per the PMI principles learned. 5. To identify and propose risk strategies. REQUIRED TEXTBOOK Harold R.
