Pamilya Ordinaryo Review/Reflection Pamilya Ordinaryo as it is the name of the family and which is the title of the film as well. “Ordinary Family” is the translation of Pamilya Ordinaryo in English and as it came in the name itself, the life of the family mentioned in the film is the ordinary life that street children have. Aries and Jane were both minors, ranging their age from 16-17. At that young age they already consider themselves as a couple and the parents of their child named Arjan. They live in streets of Manila, both of them were homeless and unemployed, the only source of money they have is through theft. The film contains a lot of lessons that the society needs to learn. Jane, the female lead is a sixteen-year-old girl. At that age she already became a parent, thief, rugby addict, and a victim of sexual assault. Her parents especially her mother doesn’t care at all because her mother is a drug addict as well. Her mother doesn’t even care at all even if she lives in streets and starve. In the movie, Arjan, the child of Jane and Aries was stolen from them. Jane stated that she was like hypnotized by the thief/kidnapper and she did not even notice that at that very moment her child will be kidnapped. Jane and Aries as the parents, they instinctively looked for their child for the whole day. And when they can’t really find Arjan by themselves they decided to ask the authorities to help them. Jane walked inside the police station alone because if Aries will accompany her then Aries might get jailed for he is a known thief in the place. At first, the police officers asked decent questions about the child but later on, the police started to ask sexually considered questions like the virginity of Jane and all. The police even asked Jane to show her boobs, and Jane as a young desperate mother, she followed all the orders. It is also clear in the movie that Jane was raped by the police officer in exchange to help her find her son. But after Jane went out of the station, she never talked about it nor mention it to his considered husband, Aries. The next person they asked for help is the barangay captain of the place they’re living in. But instead of actually helping them, the Barangay Captain talked about how young they were to become parents. Therefore, the Barangay Captain ordered her assistant to contact the DSWD. At that time, Aries and Jane knew that if they will continue to follow the assistant then they will be caged inside of DSWD shelter which both of them doesn’t consider helpful. They ran away from that place and went to a radio station instead. They called for help through the radio station and

their concern about their child was aired in the station. But looks like the station only cares about stories that they will air and doesn’t even care that much about the case of Aries and Jane because after their air time, the staff just ignored the two kids like they never heard anything. And it is the same to the TV station that Jane and Aries got featured on. The story revolves around them being lovers and how they became parents was also aired in the television but none of those people who featured them helped to find their missing child. Clearly, these stations only cared about their reputation and things that they will benefit on. And because the story and situation of Jane and Aries got featured on the Television and Radio, a lot of unknown people sent them messages, some are hurtful and most are insult. And then they came across in this one text message, saying that it is the mother of the kidnapper. Jane and Aries as a hopeless and helpless parent of Arjan, believed that that text message will help them. The sender asked to meet them and asked for money that costs 10,000 pesos to help them bring back their child. And because Aries and Jane were both unemployed the only thing that they did to get that 10,000 is to steal money from other people. After earning money, they immediately gave it to the person who stated she’s the mother of the kidnapper, but few days have passed they didn’t get any update on that woman. Turns out it was a scammer and a thief as well. After that, they got another message saying that it has their child. Without a doubt, Jane immediately believed the message and both Aries and her came to the place far from their place. On their way to the place, Aries asked Jane the question “What if our child is in a good place? Where there is enough diapers and milk for him and a comfortable place to live in?” but Jane isn’t hesitant to answer that “Even if he has a lot of milk, and even if they dress Arjan with gold diapers, my child will never be their child”. This scene shows no matter your age and status in life, if you are a mother, you will always choose your child over anything else. And then they came to the place, but they found out that the person in the address never messaged them and they don’t have their child. Aries even tried to stole other kid just to make it up to Jane, he stated that they should stop finding Arjan already and just raise the they kid they have stolen. But Jane didn’t agree on the idea she feels bad for the child and for its mother, to summarize it, they put the child back to where it is supposed to be. And that ends the film, they never got their child back.

First lesson that the film is trying to teach is to know the essence of family planning. From the parents of Aries and Jane down to themselves. No one taught them how to handle a family, and as children living in the streets without proper guidance and education it is not impossible to do the things they are not supposed to do as minors. And Jane and Aries are not the only ones who has the same life, actually they are the representation of many street children. The life that they have is the common life that homeless people have. The film in an eye opener to those who are blinded by other things, it is a call out to those who are supposed to listen but isn’t really listening. Young people shouldn’t sleep in cold streets, they aren’t supposed to steal, use drugs, and be sexually molested. It is a call out for the society to open their eyes and ears to these types of issues. Those who take advantage of others shall be punished and those irresponsible parents should be taught a lesson or two. People like Jane and Aries are victims of the society that we’re living today. What does a 16- and 17-year-old people knows?...
