Parent Education What is Parent Education? ◦ Defined as: programs, support services, and resources offered to parents and caregivers designed to support them or increase their capacity and confidence in raising healthy children ◦ Parents = key people who play a central parenting role in a child’s life ◦ Goals of parenting education ◦ Strengthen families by providing relevant, effective education ◦ Support and encourage an optimal environment for the healthy growth and development of parents and children Parent Education ◦ Has evolved historically and continues to evolve as communities become more diverse ◦ Concerned with the context of parenting within the family system and larger ecosystem ◦ Addresses specialized needs and concerns for caregivers a) Grandparents raising grandchildren b) Children with medical or special needs c) Marital separation or divorce d) Parenting at a distance (military deployments or incarceration) History of Parent Education in the US ◦ 1800s – mothers met in discussion groups ◦ 1820s – associations to teach parents how to instill religious and moral values in their children ◦ 1900s – professionals started publications and programs to provide parenting information ◦ 1909 – first White House Conference on Child Welfare ◦ 1914 – Smith-Lever Act, beginning Cooperative Extension ◦ 1930 – US Office of Education survey showed that about 400 organizations were conducting parent ed ◦ 2000s – 250,000 parent educators in the US ◦ Currently – field continues to grow Planning a Parent Education Program

Beginning developmental stage Target parents of preschoolers Topics: child development, temper tantrums, potty training, sleep, setting limits Ex., Parents as Teachers; Strengthening Families

School-age children Topics: parenting, communication, behavioral management, parentschool relationships Ex., Families and Schools Together

Adolescents Topics: teens & technology, drug use and prevention, bullying, discipline and problem solving Ex., Active Parenting of Teens; Thriving with Teens Approaches and Resources
