Principles of Classical Rhetoric – Parts of a Classical Oration
Main Parts of Classical Oration 1. Exordium - Introduction. Leading them into the oration, and making them want to go along. Ease people in. Letting people know why you’re qualified for your topic. 2. Narratio - The narrative or statement of case. Clarifying the issue using carefully selected background information. The purpose is to articulate your main claim or argument. 3. Partitio - Partition or preview of the parts. A roadmap of sort. State exactly what you’re doing, and give a general overview of your points to come. 4. Confirmatio - Arguments that prove your point. Demonstrating and confirming to your audience why your main claim is actually true. Using good reasons and evidence. 5. Refutatio - Answering possible objections or opposing arguments. Main function is to demonstrate your acknowledgment of the objections. But also to weaken or slash the validity of the objection through explanation. 6. Peroratio - Conclusion. Main function is to reemphasize your points, and what your audience to remember the most. Draw out the larger implications of your piece, and helps to affect your audience’s emotion....
