Summary of Reading (300 Word Minimum)

We live in a society that pushes the Latinos and African Americans to unite and form together some type of bond that works toward their justice and economic power. Many people don’t acknowledge the historical background of African Americans and indigenous people, slavery was created as a result of racism. Slavery is difficult to ignore; African descendants adopted new cultures and began to abandon their own traditions and instead began adopting the white culture. When it comes down to Hollywood films the Latino leaders including the African descent and indigenous people, it was rare that they would be incorporated or be a part of the media. When they are a part of the media they are being portrayed as uneducated, lazy and violent people or often they are being biased by the white by creating the perception that all Latinos look alike. Another biased opinion towards the Latinos of African descent is that they are known for being strong and skilled athletes and musicians. Trying to fit in into the white film industry was difficult for Black Latinos, before being allowed in the media they were considered nonexistent in the films as the media didn’t believe that one should follow or be influenced by them. Due to the media’s views and images on whites, some Black Latinos began to anglicize their names and reject their backgrounds. Latinos of African descent and indigenous people are excluded from obtaining economic and political power because the leaders of the Latino organization choose to not believe that racism still exists and is still being an issue today. The Afro-Latin community is finally taking a stand against racism and prejudice opinions and perceptions towards them, negative stereotyping has affected us greatly in the past. It’s time for the future generations of Black Latino descendants to proudly acknowledge and accept their cultures....
