Prepare for skill:  Gather all required equipment & place within close reach on clean surface  Introduce self, verify patient identity & explain procedure  Ask patient permission before proceeding  Assess patient for current comfort/pain/limitations.  Pull curtain & ensure privacy (simulation) Manage environment, infection control and safety  Perform hand hygiene before and after patient care/environment contact  Place patient properly aligned in chair or bed  Place pillows for comfort  Stand on side of patient closest to joint to be exercised  Allow adequate space to move each joint and muscle group  Ensure call bell within patient reach & patient comfortable at completion of skill Passive ROM  Sequence exercises from shoulder to fingers, then hips to toes (do not exercise head or neck)  Provide support above & below joint (cupping/cradling)  Expose only limb being exercised  Perform each exercise smoothly and slowly 3 times  Avoid forcing or hyperextending existing ROM  Complete ROM on one upper limb or one lower limb using correct names for each motion  Perform at least one example of each type of movement during demonstration:  Flexion/extension  Abduction/adduction  Internal/external rotation  Circumduction  Other unique movement related to type of joint Complete overall care: efficiency and quality  Display effective & therapeutic communication skills  Maintain good body mechanics throughout skill performance  Ensure patient safety & comfort maintained at all times Complete entire procedure in less than 10 minutes (note time________)
