Description

ABSTRACT Pedal operated hacksaw machine which can be used for small-scale industrial applications and household needs in which no specific input energy or power is needed in both rural and urban area where there is no adequate supply of electricity was developed. Machine consists of a sprocket arrangement, the crank, slider mechanism and the chain drive. In the mechanism, chain drive is directly connected to the hacksaw for cutting of metals and plastics. The material selection was carried out which is mainly stainless steel. Performance evaluation was carried out on the machine to ascertain its effectiveness. Pedal power is the transfer of energy from a human form source through the use of a foot pedal and crank system. In this pedal operated hacksaw machine which can be used for industrial applications and household needs in which no power or kind of energy is needed as it is paddled, this mechanism consists of a crank and pedal is directly connected to the hacksaw through crank and slider mechanism for the process of cutting the work piece. The main aim of the project is to reduce the human effort for machining various materials. This kind of a hacksaw also works as an exercise to someone who does not have time for exercising because it requires lot of energy. This kind of hacksaw works on the principle of conservation of rotational motion. The hacksaw is passed through the guide ways by means maintaining the means of cutting axis. The blade type and material depends on the material that will be cut with that particular hacksaw.

1. INTRODUCTION 1.1

Problem Statement As we were given the project to choose from different topics we have decided to pick the Pedal operated hacksaw. We felt there is a need for this type of hacksaw as it will be used in the engineering field like factories, workshops and home use. We thought it is the best as it consumes lot of power used and energy compared to the electrical hacksaw. It is advantageous because it happens sometimes to forget about doing backups so that when the electricity goes off backup can take over, so when having this type of hacksaw there won’t be any need of backups because it uses no electricity as it will be peddled. Many factories and workshops are using electrical hacksaw so we felt there is a need to do this type of hacksaw because not all the people go to do physical exercises after their daily duties so this type of hacksaw also helps to do that because it needs one to apply energy when peddling. It will also help to focus on what you will be doing because you

will not have time to be disturbed by something else you will be focusing on what you are doing.

1.2

Background Chaudhary et al. [1],The pedal operated hacksaw means applying the strength to peddle on the pedals and the reciprocating rod welded to the pedal of a bicycle like component, a sprocket and a chain drive. The hacksaw is connected with the reciprocating rod and the power used can be four or five times when peddling than when using the hand cranking hacksaw. Adarsh and Kushagra [2], made many improvements to the cutting ability of blades used to cut the work piece and were sold under the trade name Star Hacksaw. Vishal et al. [3], The most efficient mechanism using human energy in the 19 th century.

Objective Objectivess

 The designing of a pedal operated hacksaw will benefit the factories, workshops and home use because there won’t be a need to buy electricity.  There won’t be a need for backups so this saves money for other things.  There is an advantage for physical fitness because it uses human power.  This project needs to be done because it will give us more time to get to know new things, and be exposed to new things out there.  There are many types of hacksaw: i.e. electrical hacksaw, hand operated hacksaw and the pedal operated hacksaw.

2. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY 2.1

Preliminary IIdeas deas There are different types of hacksaw operated in many different ways

 Hand Pedal Oper Operated ated Hacksaw: this type of hacksaw will be peddled using hands and chair will be needed for someone who is going to be cutting the material to seat on it.  Pedal Oper Opera ated Hacksaw: this type of hacksaw needs to be paddled in order to operate and it becomes an advantage for physical fitness because it becomes like and exercise when a person uses it. It will be a bicycle like cause it will consist of sprockets and a handles for balance when seating on the chair.

Final selection

We have decided to go with the Pedal Operated Hacksaw because it is the one that will not cost much compared to others, and becomes easy to use it and is good for human health as it is some type of an exercise.

: it is a part that need to be pushed with foot to propel the machine that it is being used on and many materials can be used to design it but ours is made of

: it is a narrow fine toothed blade used and is commonly used for cutting metal and and it is made from carbon steel .

Frame made

: it is a hard main structure from which something is made or build from and is With aluminum alloy alloy..

Seat

: it is designed because the person that will be cutting the material has to be comfortable so that he/she can do a good and an outstanding work when cutting the material. The material can be any of your choice as long as it is comfortable.

Crank

: it is an arm keyed at right angles to the end of a shaft by which circular motion is imparted. It is made of steel.

3. CONCLUSION A low cost and simple designed pedal operated hacksaw machine is fabricated, which reduces human effort. The simple design of conversional type can be used to fulfil in for industrial applications during power shutdown scenarios. By using this model one can do cutting operation as per the requirement without the use of electricity which saves the electrical power. This type of design will be suitable for light duty operation because the material that will be used when designing it will be light as we also minimizing the costs, but it will be worth it.
