Personal experience essay on how math affects life and its aspects from a personal view....

Description

Personal Experience Essay Overview Math 103 is a general education class in mathematics; at MSU all general education classes in math have a 2000 word writing requirement. We will meet that requirement by writing three 2 page papers throughout the course of the semester. For this assignment you will type a two page essay about your personal experience with math and the opinions you have formed from those experiences. This essay should include your particular strengths and weaknesses, math in your everyday life, and expectations from this class. Additionally you should describe, in your own words, what a mathematician does. As this essay is based on your personal experience you will not need to cite any sources.

Grading a Personal Experience Essay This assignment is based on your own personal experience, however that does not mean you should expect an automatic A. Your grade will primarily be determined by adherence to the structure outlined below, giving a complete answer to all questions, and the flow of your writing. Your paper should have a clear introductory paragraph summarizing your opinions, a body where you support your opinions stated in the opening paragraph with personal experiences, and a conclusion summing up your main points and stating your closing remarks. Before submitting your paper you should spell and grammar check your essay. We have a zero tolerance plagiarism policy. Plagiarized work will be given an automatic zero and will be reported to the administration. The administration reserves the right to take further disciplinary action.

Format and Content of your paper Type settings: Your paper should have the following settings: a. 1 inch margins all around b. 12 point font size c. Use Times New Roman font d. Double space the entire document Title Page: This page does not count towards your page total. This double spaced page should include the following: a. The Title b. Your name c. Affiliation (Montclair State University) d. Class and Section Body: Your paper should have three clear sections: an introduction of your main points, a body where you support your main points with your personal experiences, and a conclusion/summary of your paper. You should address the following topics as separate sections and discuss them as a whole in your introduction and conclusion (see last page for structure): a.

An introduction

b.

Your math education

c.

Your use of math in your everyday life

d.

Your expectations of this class

e.

A personal description of what a mathematician does

f.

A conclusion

Structure The structure of your paper should contain sections as follows: Introduction The introduction does not require the above heading. You should give the reader a clear introduction to what they are about to read and develop your thesis statement. My Mathematics Education After the introduction you should address the first topic, your experience with math. How Math Impacts My Life You should discuss how math is used in your everyday life. And how your personal experience has shaped your use of mathematics. My Expectations from this class Here you should describe what you expect to gain from this class. You should describe topics you would be interested in learning and experiences you hope to have. A Mathematician’s Work Here you should discuss your opinion of what a Mathematician does. You should discuss how you think this is justified from your personal experience. Conclusion Here you should summarize the above as a comprehensive whole.

How you will be Graded Each of the sections listed above will be graded on a 4 point scale for a total of 24 points. Your placement on the 4 point scale will be determined by: 1. The completeness of your response in a given section 2. The flow of your writing Points will be deducted if you do not meet the two page minimum. Submitting your Essay Your essay is due on class 5. You should submit your essay through Canvas. It is your responsibility to be sure you are able to log in to your canvas and that you upload either a word document or PDF. Papers will not be accepted after the due date without a doctor’s note. Please note, in canvas you are able to upload your essay more than one time. However, we will only grade the most recent submission. For this reason, we expect you to upload a test document or rough draft a week before the due date to ensure that you are able to submit your essay. Missing the due date because you didn’t know how to submit your essay through canvas is NOT an acceptable reason....
