What is evidence Information from witnesses Predictions Use the ABC rule! The FAO views the scene and considers what is useful and then preserves it The CSA will establish what is useful and preserve it for the CSI The CSI gathers facts and use their experience The CFI will do the same but for digital evidence.

Documentation –   

The scene needs to be properly documented with a permanent record of photos, videos and handwritten or digital notes The CSI normally carries out the photography Everybody who attends the scene needs to take notes

Collection and preservation –     

Relevant material is collected Quality standards! ISO 17025 PPE must be worn New and unused packaging must be used Recordings of batch bar codes must be done

Identification –  

A comparison process between the evidence and known evidence: dimensions, the shape, state, properties etc The description puts them into a class & subclass. The unique features identify then. The features can be individualised

Comparison – 

The comparison between the questioned object and an exemplar or control

Individualisation –     

Demonstrating that the questioned object created the ‘mark’ Demonstrating sufficiently unusual or unique features on one things matches Relationship between two devices Dna sample A fingerprint

Evaluation –  

Evaluate the usefulness of the evidence Interpretation is all about giving a meaning to analytical results

Reconstruction –    

Requires deep thinking Mentally or physically Establish what happened using pattern evidence, lab analysis in the context of crime A digital model could be used

Reporting and Presentation –   

All the scene personnel and experts must report their findings – fact and opinions They must write a statement Sometimes they must give evidence in court
